About This Position

Purpose of this position:

We are seeking a courteous, organized, and culturally sensitive Front Desk Medical Receptionist to join our team at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). In this role, you will be the first point of contact for our patients, helping to create a welcoming environment while supporting access to high-quality, comprehensive primary care services. The ideal candidate will be committed to serving diverse populations and ensuring equitable access to care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet patients and visitors in a professional and compassionate manner
  • Check-in and check-out patients, verifying demographic and insurance information
  • Collect co-pays, payments, and provide receipts as needed including sliding scale
  • Schedule, confirm, reschedule, and cancel appointments using EHR system
  • Answer and route incoming calls, respond to messages, and provide information regarding services
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date patient records in compliance with HIPAA and clinic policies
  • Verify insurance eligibility, including Medicaid, Medicare, and sliding fee scale documentation
  • Assist patients with registration paperwork and translation support as needed (if bilingual)
  • Collaborate with medical assistants, case managers, and providers to coordinate patient flow
  • Support patients with referrals, authorizations, and other administrative tasks as directed
  • Ensure reception area is clean, organized, and stocked with relevant information and forms
  • Uphold the mission and values of the health center, emphasizing equitable and culturally competent care

Working Conditions:

  • Outpatient clinic setting
  • Frequent interaction with patients, families, and healthcare team members
  • Requires sitting, standing, and use of office equipment for extended periods

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training in medical administration preferred
  • At least 1 year of front office experience in a medical setting, preferably in a community health or FQHC environment
  • Experience working with underserved and diverse patient populations strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems; experience with eClinicalWorks, NextGen, SmartCare, or similar systems is a plus
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Bilingual (e.g., English/Spanish) preferred or as required by patient population
  • Knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, managed care plans, and sliding fee scale processes
  • Professional, empathetic, and patient-centered approach to customer service
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Other duties as required
