Position Overview:
General Dynamics Electric Boat is seeking a Manager to lead Non-Traditional Off-site research, design, and engineering activities supporting the development of new processes and non-traditional construction operations. Travel to various locations including but not limited to California, Maryland, Wisconsin and Groton may or will be required. This role is responsible for advancing innovative manufacturing, modular construction, and off-site production methods that enhance efficiency, quality, and schedule performance across Electric Boat programs.
The successful candidate will provide programmatic leadership and strategic oversight for cross-functional teams engaged in process development, engineering integration, and execution of advanced construction methodologies. This role involves a combination of collaborative/in-person and independent work, it will take the form of a hybrid work format, with time split between working on-site and remotely.
Key Responsibilities- Serves as the leader of the project management team and planning, project team, quality, engineering design team and line management as the program design validated in first article fabrications and then ramps to our customer’s ship-set rate per month.
- Lead and manage research and design efforts focused on developing new manufacturing processes, construction techniques, and off-site production operations.
- Oversee engineering integration of non-traditional and off-site construction methods into existing and future shipbuilding programs.
- Collaborate with engineering, planning, production, quality, supply chain, and program offices to ensure feasibility, readiness, and scalability of new processes.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety, cost, schedule, and quality performance.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, tools, and methodologies for applicability to submarine construction and advanced manufacturing environments.
- Establish technical standards, work-flows, and governance for non-traditional construction operations.
- Provide leadership to multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, designers, and technical specialists.
- Support risk identification, mitigation planning, and technical decision-making for innovative construction approaches.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory, quality, and safety requirements.
- Prepare and present technical briefings, business cases, and status reports to senior leadership.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrated experience leading process development, research initiatives, or non-traditional construction operations.
- Strong understanding of engineering design integration with manufacturing and production systems.
- Proven leadership experience managing cross-functional and technical teams.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, Systems, or related discipline); with MBA degree preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in engineering, manufacturing, construction operations, or advanced industrial environments.
- 4+ years of supervisor experience with direct reports.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance.
- Experience in shipbuilding, defense products, or other highly regulated manufacturing industries.
- Background in modular construction, offsite fabrication, advanced manufacturing, automation, 2D/3D CAD, machine design, or innovation technology integration.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing, digital engineering, or model-based engineering concepts.
- Program or project management experience supporting large-scale, complex programs.
- Some Commercial Business background standing up a business or business unit in support a new business venture.
