About This Position

JOB SUMMARY

The Substance Abuse Counselor serves as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team, providing comprehensive treatment, education, and support to patients with substance use disorders. Responsibilities include conducting assessments, developing individualized treatment plans, facilitating individual and group counseling sessions, and coordinating care with medical and behavioral health professionals. The counselor also ensures accurate documentation and billing practices in accordance with departmental and organizational policies, while maintaining the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Facilitates individual and group counseling sessions utilizing evidence-based practices and therapeutic techniques.
  2. Maintains an assigned caseload by conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and completing all required clinical documentation in a timely manner.
  3. Partners with administrative staff, utilization review, admissions, and other clinical teams to ensure timely and efficient coordination of treatment services.
  4. Maintains and reviews clinical documentation and patient records to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulatory and quality standards.
  5. Ensures adherence to all applicable regulatory, licensing, and accreditation standards.
  6. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to improve the quality of patient care and support achievement of program performance goals.
  7. Maintains strict adherence to scheduled work hours with regular and reliable attendance.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Substance Abuse Counselor
    1. Completion of 360 hours of substance use disorders-specific training approved by the Department of Safety and Professional Services.
    2. Minimum of 3000 hours of clinical experience in providing the 8 practice dimensions of a substance abuse counselor.
    3. Evidence of successful passage of the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors’ NCAC I exam.
  2. Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor
    1. Associates degree or higher in a behavioral science field from an accredited university or college.
    2. Completion of 360 hours of substance use disorders-specific training approved by the Department of Safety and Professional Services.
    3. Minimum of 5000 hours of clinical experience in providing the 8 practice dimensions of a substance abuse counselor.
    4. Evidence of successful passage of the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors’ NCAC I exam.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES

  1. Substance Abuse Counselor: Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC) credential.
  2. Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor: Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) credential.
  3. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification at time of hire, or within three-months of employment.
