Job Description

Job Summary:

The Harvard Museums of Science & Culture (HMSC) is a partnership of public museums in Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences that includes the Harvard Museum of Natural History (HMNH), the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East (HMANE), the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments (CHSI), and the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology (PMAE). Reporting to the Director of Communications & Marketing, the Print & Digital Media Designer is part of a team responsible for building and maintaining HMSC’s brand through strategic public relations and marketing plans that leverage interdisciplinary exhibits, programs, and other activities to increase visibility, visitation, and support for the museums. The position is responsible for all print and digital marketing-related design work, including, but not limited to, brochures and maps, exterior banners and signage, wayfinding elements, exhibition and event posters and advertisements, museum membership materials, internal stationery and specialty visitor passes, and visitor handouts/activities. The position also coordinates external design projects for culture-specific events and manages accounts payable processes for all marketing projects. In addition, the position collaborates with the department director to develop and maintain branding guidelines for the museums.
Job-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Design and produce a variety of visitor materials, including specialty passes, museum maps, brochures, take-home items, and activity sheets.
  • Develop promotional posters, advertisements, and produce digital assets designed for use on screens throughout the institution and online.
  • Design and support exterior wayfinding elements and banners that guide and inform visitors.
  • Work directly with contracted external vendors to develop and produce marketing materials that are culturally specific and aligned with organizational standards.
  • Manage all vendor relationships and workflows related to collateral production, including overseeing accounts payable and billing.
  • Design membership program collateral and update designs for internal stationery resources.
  • Participate in HMSC committees and attend regular team meetings as well as All-Staff meetings to support cross-departmental collaboration.

Working Conditions:

This primarily on-site position will be based in Cambridge, MA with a minimum of 3 days on campus.

Physical Requirements:

Intensive computer work with repetitive motion (typing, mouse, and graphic pen)


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of graphic design experience creating print media such as posters, labels, books, banners, etc.
  • Experience with In-Design, Photoshop, Acrobat, Illustrator, Canva, Capcut, Constant Contact, Bridge, and Microsoft Office Suite applications, including PowerPoint
  • Experience in generating design templates and updating existing designs and templates
  • Experience creating social media graphic designs, static, slide, and video

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Undergraduate degree in graphic design or a similar field preferred.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills necessary for communication with multiple constituencies across the unit, school, and university, as well as external collaborators such as translators and culturally specific advisors.
  • Thorough understanding of the print production process
  • Thorough understanding of color theory, typography, and design principles
  • Ability to take initiative, handle multiple project schedules, and set priorities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and as a member of a team is essential, as is the ability to work independently to meet deadlines
  • Basic understanding of budget concepts and accounts payable procedures
  • Experience with copyediting is a plus
  • Experience in file management, organization, and backup
  • Experience with Premier or video editing software is a plus
  • Experience with Figma is a plus
  • Illustration and logo development experience a plus
  • Experience with Procreate is a plus

Additional Information

  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hours per week
  • Compensation Range/Rate: $70K-$77K

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
