Senior Director of Finance at FOCUS HR INC – Chicago, Illinois

Are you a hands-on finance leader who can step in, take charge, and make an immediate impact?

Center on Halsted is looking for a Senior Director of Finance who isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves, manage multiple priorities, and lead with confidence—with minimal ramp-up.

This is not a purely strategic role. We need someone who can own the details, drive execution, and clearly communicate financial insights at the highest level, including presenting to the Board of Directors.

What You’ll Do:

Take Ownership & Lead Immediately

• Step into a critical leadership role with minimal training and quickly take control of financial operations
• Balance strategic oversight with day-to-day execution—no task is too big or too small
• Manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment

Be a Trusted Financial Voice

• Present financials, forecasts, and insights to the CEO and Board of Directors
• Communicate complex financial information clearly and confidently
• Provide recommendations that directly influence organizational decisions

Run Financial Operations

• Oversee budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and cash flow
• Lead month-end close and ensure accuracy across all accounting functions
• Maintain strong internal controls and financial discipline
• Oversee outsourced accounting partners and ensure deliverables are met

Ensure Compliance & Funding Oversight

• Manage financial aspects of grants, contracts, and multiple funding sources
• Ensure timely, accurate reporting and regulatory compliance
• Lead audit process and support Form 990 preparation

Lead & Support the Team

• Provide direction, accountability, and support to finance staff
• Step in directly when issues arise—this is a highly hands-on role
• Improve systems, processes, and financial visibility across the organization

What You Bring

• 5+ years of nonprofit finance leadership experience
• Bachelors degree in relevant field
• Proven ability to multitask and operate independently with minimal guidance
• Strong experience in budgeting, reporting, and financial operations
• Confidence presenting to executive leadership and Board members
• Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal
• Hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves mindset with strong attention to detail
• Proficiency in financial systems (Blackbaud a plus) and Excel
