POSITION SUMMARY

The Safety Manager is a critical leadership role responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) program at Apex Geotech Solutions. This individual will serve as the primary safety authority for the manufacturing facility, ensuring full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations including OSHA, EPA, and industry-specific standards. The Safety Manager partners closely with operations, engineering, and HR leadership to embed a proactive safety culture throughout all levels of the organization, with the ultimate goal of achieving zero incidents and fostering a workplace where every employee goes home safely.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

EHS Program Development & Management

  • Design, implement, and continuously improve the facility-wide Environmental Health & Safety management system aligned with OSHA, ANSI, ISO 45001, and company standards
  • Develop, review, and update written safety programs, policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and emergency action plans on a regular basis
  • Establish and track EHS performance metrics (leading and lagging indicators); report KPIs to senior leadership monthly
  • Manage the facility's environmental compliance program including air quality, waste management, stormwater, and hazardous materials handling

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with all applicable OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1910 General Industry and 1926 Construction standards as applicable), EPA regulations, and state/local requirements
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agency inspections, audits, and inquiries; manage responses and corrective actions
  • Maintain all required regulatory permits, logs, and documentation including OSHA 300/300A logs, Tier II reports, and chemical inventories
  • Monitor evolving regulatory landscape and proactively update programs to maintain compliance

Incident Management & Investigation

  • Lead thorough investigations of all workplace injuries, illnesses, near-misses, and property damage incidents using root cause analysis methodologies (5-Why, Fishbone, ICAM, etc.)
  • Develop and track corrective and preventive action (CAPA) plans to ensure recurrence prevention and timely closure
  • Manage workers' compensation cases in coordination with HR and third-party administrators; facilitate return-to-work programs
  • Maintain accurate incident records and produce trend analyses to identify systemic risks

Hazard Identification & Risk Management

  • Conduct routine and targeted facility safety inspections, walkthroughs, and job hazard analyses (JHAs) across all manufacturing and support areas
  • Lead the facility's Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and risk assessment program; prioritize and track remediation of identified hazards
  • Oversee chemical management program including SDS management, chemical substitution initiatives, and hazardous waste disposal
  • Manage machine guarding, lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, fall protection, and other critical safety programs

Training & Safety Culture

  • Develop and deliver engaging safety training programs for all employees and contractors, including new hire onboarding, annual refreshers, and task-specific training
  • Partner with supervisors and team leads to conduct toolbox talks, safety observations, and behavioral-based safety (BBS) coaching
  • Champion a culture of safety excellence — recognize safe behaviors, engage employees in safety committees, and drive grassroots safety ownership
  • Coordinate and facilitate Safety Committee meetings; manage action item tracking and follow-up

Emergency Preparedness & Response

  • Develop and maintain the facility Emergency Response Plan (ERP) including fire, chemical spill, medical, and severe weather protocols
  • Coordinate and conduct emergency drills (fire evacuation, shelter-in-place, spill response) on a scheduled basis; evaluate and improve response effectiveness
  • Maintain emergency response equipment and ensure all employees are trained on emergency procedures
  • Serve as the on-site incident commander during emergency events

Contractor & Visitor Safety

  • Administer the contractor safety management program including pre-qualification, orientation, permit-to-work, and performance monitoring
  • Conduct contractor safety audits and ensure third-party workers comply with all Apex Geotech safety requirements
  • Oversee visitor safety orientation and escort procedures for the manufacturing facility
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field required
  • Master's degree or additional technical certifications a plus

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive EHS experience, with at least 2 years in a manufacturing or industrial environment
  • Demonstrated experience managing regulatory compliance programs and leading incident investigations
  • Experience with ISO 14001 or ISO 45001 management systems preferred
  • Prior supervisory or team leadership experience strongly preferred

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) – strongly preferred
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or OHST also valued
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry certification (required within 90 days of hire if not current)
  • First Aid / CPR / AED certification required

Skills & Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of OSHA General Industry regulations, EPA standards, and applicable state EHS requirements
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in root cause analysis, risk assessment, and data-driven decision making
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to present safety topics clearly to all levels of the organization
  • Proven ability to influence without authority and build collaborative relationships across departments
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with EHS management software (e.g., Intelex, Cority, Velocity EHS) preferred
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environmentes

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The Safety Manager works in both office and active manufacturing floor environments. The role requires regular presence on the production floor where exposure to noise, machinery, chemicals, and varying temperatures is expected. Appropriate PPE must be worn in all designated areas. The position may require occasional extended hours during incident investigations, regulatory inspections, or emergency events.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, climb, stoop, and navigate the manufacturing floor for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. and work in confined spaces or at heights when required
  • Occasional travel to regulatory offices, industry conferences, or other Apex Geotech sites (up to 10%)
