Associate Editor, Art & Entertainment at Chronicle Books – San Francisco, California
About This Position
Chronicle Books is looking for a creative and savvy Associate Editor to join the Art & Entertainment publishing group. From Grumpy Cat to Dolly Parton, the Art & Entertainment team acquires and publishes art and pop culture books, gift formats, and calendars across a wide range of non-fiction categories. Our titles are contagious, beautifully designed, funny, and commercial. We need a quick-thinking, pop-culture and trend-loving editor who has endless creative book ideas, agent relationships and a growing track-record of acquisitions, and a clear vision for what makes a book irresistible.
Key Responsibilities: This Associate Editor will focus on acquiring for the Art & Entertainment book list, with some additional format and calendar responsibilities. They will independently acquire (or project edit) approximately 8 books and 4-6 gift formats and calendars a year. They will build a distinctive, innovative, and profitable list by generating ideas, conducting consumer research, and adding value whenever possible. The Associate Editor will focus on key Art & Entertainment publishing categories like humor, photography, music, creativity/inspiration, brand- and trend-driven, pets, and licensing. The Associate Editor will provide some project management support to an Executive Editor including proposal and consumer research, evaluating manuscripts, assisting in art research, tracking and overseeing corrections to galleys, and maintaining title schedules.
The person in this role will also project manage and edit ongoing and established book and gift series publishing, aim to acquire 2 breakout or lead book titles per year, and maintain and grow relationships with agents, authors, licensors, packagers, overseas publishers, and other publishing industry professionals. They will evaluate and present proposals, generate P&Ls, tipsheets, and copy, make offers, and monitor marketplace trends. Guiding titles through the publishing process, working alongside Art & Entertainment group members to exceed goals for publishing and developing homegrown ideas based on marketplace trends will also be part of this role.
Hiring Salary Range: $68,000 - $78,000. This range represents the anticipated low and high end of the expected salary for this position and will be determined by factors including, but not limited to, an applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and geographic location as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. This position is eligible for our profit share plan.

Schedule: Employees at Chronicle Books will follow a regular hybrid schedule in our San Francisco office of at least three (3) in-office days per week and up to five (5) in-office days per week, depending on project and business needs. Requirements:Candidates will need a minimum of five years’ publishing experience with proven acquisitions and project management skills, demonstrated abilities in copywriting and written communications, and experience growing agent contacts in the publishing world. They should have a demonstrated ability to acquire, develop, position, and edit a list of strong performing titles in humor, pop culture, and general non-fiction, and they should be strongly self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as in a creative team, while modeling policies that promote the company’s vision and a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and collaborative culture.
