About This Position

Description:

Ghost Robotics is the industry leader in legged robotic systems that not only help our customers solve complex operational, national security, and technical challenges to save lives, reduce harm and improve outcomes.

We are looking for a Senior Embedded Systems Engineer with a strong blend of electrical design and firmware development to help build the next generation of Ghost’s legged robotic platforms. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys owning systems end-to-end—from schematic and PCB layout through embedded firmware, bring-up, and real-world deployment.

This position reports to the Head of Electrical & Firmware Engineering and works closely with a fast-moving interdisciplinary team of mechanical, software, and systems engineers.

What You’ll Do

Electrical Design & Hardware Development

  • Design electrical schematics and printed circuit boards (PCBs) for embedded robotic systems.
  • Perform PCB layout with careful attention to signal integrity, EMI/EMC, thermal performance, and power distribution.
  • Support the full hardware development lifecycle including prototype builds, board bring-up, validation, and debugging.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing partners to ensure high-quality production and robust DFM practices.

Embedded Firmware Development

  • Develop low-level firmware in C/C++ for embedded robotic subsystems including sensing, motor control, battery systems, and control loops.
  • Integrate sensors and payloads such as RGB cameras, thermal/IR, TOF, audio, gas sensors, and other mission-specific systems.
  • Implement and optimize high-speed communication interfaces such as Ethernet, EtherCAT, QSPI, and related protocols.
  • Support real-time system performance through interrupt scheduling, DMA, and RTOS-based development when applicable.

Integration & Field Support

  • Work hands-on with robotics hardware to troubleshoot issues and validate system performance.
  • Partner with cross-functional engineering teams to integrate electronics into full robotic platforms.
  • Support customer deployments and help ensure systems are reliable in demanding environments.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and participate in design reviews.

  • Experience with microcontrollers such as STM32 (or similar).
  • Hands-on experience with board bring-up, debugging, and hardware/software integration.
  • Familiarity with embedded communication protocols and performance constraints.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in fast-paced environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Robotics, mechatronics, or mobile robotic systems experience.
  • Motor control experience (BLDC, FOC).
  • Familiarity with FreeRTOS or other RTOS environments.
  • Experience with high-speed PCB interfaces (Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.x).
  • Experience supporting production hardware and working with contract manufacturers.
  • Experience maintaining larger firmware codebases and CI/CD workflows.

Education

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field required.

Location

Philadelphia, PA (no remote candidates considered at this time).

Travel
