SUNY Maritime College is looking to hire either a licensed Doctor, PA or Nurse and Mental Health Counselor for the entire training period, or for each half (Cruise A or Cruise B) indicated below.

EMPIRE STATE is a public vessel of the United States, solely operated for the training and licensure of the cadet midshipmen. While onboard the cadets are engaged in classroom lecture, maintenance and repair, watch keeping, and drills and training exercises all in preparation for their eventual licensure. With over 500 cadets onboard, there will be approximately 20% that are also in ROTC, and preparing for commissioning in the Armed Services following graduation and licensure.

The training days are geared to maximize the experience of the cadets and flexibility is a requirement regarding daily scheduling of duties.

The Full Cruise appointment is anticipated to begin April 27, 2026, and ends July 20, 2026. However, you may apply and be considered for one of the following.

Cruise A Half: April 27, 2026 - June 09, 2026
Cruise B Half: June 10, 2026 - July 20, 2026
Full Cruise: April 27, 2026 - July 20, 2026

Doctor, Physician Assistant and Nurse

Description of Duties:

  • Medical staff onboard perform the vital duties expected of the Medical Department onboard any Merchant or Navy ship
  • Responsible for performing the exam and filling out paperwork for the USCG (United States Coast Guard) 719K Medical examination (Doctor/PA)
  • Attending to sick call twice daily (in port and underway)
  • Daily supervision of Ship's Medical and cadet corpsmen
  • Daily sanitary inspections of berthing, common areas, and food service areas with the Ship's Master - both underway and while in Port
  • Attendance with any incidents or injuries
  • Participation on the Ship's Safety Committee

Mental Health Counselor

Description of Duties:

  • Provide brief individual and group psychotherapy and crisis intervention to SUNY Maritime students while at sea
  • Conduct mental status assessments and make recommendations regarding students' psychological welfare
  • Maintains accurate and current records of all activities, including clinical records
  • Provide skills training to members of the community, both informally for individuals and in a formal manner for staff, faculty and students
  • Participate in departmental meetings and committees, represent department through college and division committees and activities
  • Provides faculty and staff consultation and resources in their work with students and encourages their participation in providing students both individual and group assistance
  • Reports directly to the Master of the Training ship to debrief about high level cases and report safety concerns

Due to the unique nature of the training ship, this job description outlines the general responsibilities of the position but does not encompass all duties that may be inherent to the role. Additional duties that are reasonably related to the position and consistent with the directives of the Captain of the Training Ship may be assigned.



Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications - Doctor, PA and Nurse

  • Possess and maintain a valid license and certification to practice as a Medical Doctor or Physician Assistant or Registered Nurse
  • Must possess and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate to transmit specific controlled substances
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • Coast Guard certification (Certificate of Registry) as a Medical Officer with the help of the college
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC)
  • Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)
  • Valid Medical Certificate. The Medical Certificate is issued with the original MMC; however it must be renewed every 2-years
  • US Passport
  • Alcohol and/or drug testing. DOT/USCG Periodic Drug Testing Documentation
  • Previous Emergency Medicine, Urgent Care or Family Medicine experience - Preferred

Required Qualifications - Mental Health Counselor

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work or related field
  • License to practice LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, PHD
  • Active (Unrestricted) New York State Driver License
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years' experience providing mental health treatment
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC)
  • Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)
  • Valid Medical Certificate. The Medical Certificate is issued with the original MMC; however it must be renewed every 2-years
  • US Passport
  • Alcohol and/or drug testing. DOT/USCG Periodic Drug Testing Documentation. Will assist in acquiring these documents

Note that Drug Testing in accordance with Title 46 CFR 16.210 will be conducted Pier Side.

Additional Information:

Salary/Compensation: The salary is based on a daily rate of pay and will commensurate with license, certification and experience. Meals are included. Application review to commence immediately.

This is a temporary appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
