Position Summary:
The Senior Group Exercise Instructor provides safe, engaging, and inclusive group fitness instruction for Active Older Adults (typically ages 55+). This role focuses on improving participants’ overall health, mobility, balance, strength, and quality of life in a supportive, non-intimidating environment.
The ideal candidate is energetic, patient, and passionate about working with older adults and adapting fitness programs to meet a wide range of abilities and physical needs.
Essential Functions:
1. Lead group exercise classes designed specifically for seniors, including but not limited to:
- Chair fitness
- Low-impact cardio
- Strength & balance
- Flexibility and mobility
- Arthritis-friendly or adaptive formats
2. Create a welcoming, encouraging, and non-competitive environment for all participants.
3. Demonstrate and model proper exercise technique with appropriate modifications for varying fitness levels, injuries, or physical limitations.
4. Monitor participant safety at all times and provide appropriate cues, corrections, and alternatives as needed.
5. Build positive relationships with members, creating a strong sense of community and belonging.
6. Communicate regularly with the Health & Wellness Director regarding class attendance, participant needs, and program feedback.
7. Maintain accurate attendance and follow YMCA policies and procedures.
8. Maintain all required certifications and complete ongoing training as required.
9. Represent the YMCA mission and values through daily interactions with members, staff, and the community.
10. Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and special YMCA events as requested.

- Ability to modify exercises in real time
- Passion for helping older adults stay active and independent
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Ability to demonstrate exercises and movements for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, carry, and set up equipment (up to 30 lbs).
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
- Program size typically ranges from 5 to 50 participants.
