About This Position

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Minimum Qualifications:
Enrolled in an accredited academic Respiratory Care program and have completed minimal one semester clinical practicum, apply discipline specific knowledge and skills, ability to understand written instructions and perform basic mathematical calculations; demonstrates skills for assigned specialty area/function or assigned procedures.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS:
Required:
  • BLS Certification required.
  • Licensed as Respiratory Care Practitioner by the Texas Medical Board (TMB-RCP) within six
    months of graduation.

JOB SUMMARY:
Under direct supervision, the clinical Respiratory Care student will apply their classroom knowledge in a health care setting to provide competent basic and specialty respiratory care utilizing an interdisciplinary approach and individualizing care to meet unique patient needs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Under supervision of Respiratory Therapist, the Respiratory Student will be able to:
  • Assess the respiratory care needs of patients.
  • Identify potential and actual diagnosis/patient care needs and identifies the contraindications and possible complications of patients receiving respiratory care.
  • Initiate, evaluate, and review respiratory care plans that reflect a multidisciplinary approach to appropriate preventive action.
  • Set up and maintain respiratory equipment.
  • Maintain oxygen, humidity, and aerosol therapy equipment inventory and supplies.
  • Perform blood gas analysis and respiratory function tests.
  • Participate in patient rounds.
  • Maintain patient records.
  • Provide patient/family respiratory care instruction.
  • Adhere to internal controls and reporting structure.

Marginal or Periodic Functions:
  • Performs related duties as required by supervising Respiratory Therapist.

SALARY RANGE:

Salary commensurate with experience.

SCHEDULE:

Part-time (20-39.99 hours/week)

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/EQUIPMENT:

  • Standard patient care environment.
  • Standard respiratory equipment
  • Conditions such as noise, orders, cramped workspace, and/or fumes that could sometimes cause discomfort.
  • Moderate to extreme physical effort may be required such as walking, standing and lifting materials, equipment, objects, and/or patients. May be exposed to such occupational hazards as communicable diseases, radiation, chemotherapeutic agents, and disoriented or combative patients.
  • Occasional lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs.
  • Vision, hearing, talking, and senses of touch abilities must be adequate enough to enable one to quickly and accurately perform tasks such as reading small print, reading from monitoring equipment, defining details, sending and receiving clear and accurate verbal communication.
  • Shift work may be required.
  • Alertness and careful attention to detail will be required to avoid injury.
  • May be required to be on standby and work extended shifts in situations deemed necessary by area leadership.
