Chief Operating Officer, Community Medical CenterJob Summary:
Reporting to the hospital President, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for the effective and efficient operations of the hospital, hospital outpatient centers, hospital operations related to system service lines, and other business operations. The COO serves as a key partner to the President and other senior executives and physician leaders. This individual is the highest-ranking executive in the absence of the CEO. As a key member of the executive team, the COO will be a key participant in executive-level performance improvement, strategic planning, operational planning, and policy development committees.
Reports to:
- The Chief Operating Officer, Community Medical Center reports directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer, Community Medical Center.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree required. Degree in health services (D.P.H., M.P.H., or M.H.A.), business administration (M.B.A.) strongly preferred.
- Substantial healthcare facility management experience
- Five years of progressive management experience within healthcare operations/management required
- Accomplishments building high-performing, cutting-edge organizations
- Demonstrated experience and success delivering excellent service, operational and quality outcomes within an acute-care hospital setting.
Essential Functions:
- Maintain open communication with physicians and employees. Serve as chairperson or member for specific committees as needed to communicate relevant issues.
- Participate in educational programs for the management team as a presenter or developer.
- Attend in-house and outside seminars to keep informed of trends in health care.
- Delegates and prioritizes work assignments in relation to the individual associate’s competence.
- Promote staff development through the utilization of appropriate learning resources.
- Provide for orientation, in-service training and continuing education of all persons in the department.
- Maintain the confidentiality, security and integrity for the management of associate/patient information according to Community Medical Center’s Policy & Procedure protocol.
- Develop and maintain appropriate quality control programs. Promote and sponsor quality improvement teams and processes.
- Participate in activities, committees, projects and teams.
- Integrates departmental services with the hospital’s primary functions.
- Develop yearly goals and objectives for assigned departments.
- Assist in the development of Department Heads, enabling them to be effective managers in a decentralized system.
- Collaborate with health system and university graduate medical education leaders to create sound business and operational plans to advance the academic mission of the health system, including, but not limited to: the development of residency and fellowship business plans, system GME strategic plans, and administrative and operational policies and procedures.
- Provide executive leadership to the system-wide palliative care program and partner with the physician executive to develop strategic, business, and operational plans.
- In collaboration with university leaders, represent the health system on the joint committee, and provide administrative support, including, but not limited to, development of agendas and review and tracking of deliverables.
- Achieve the highest level of performance in CMC operating units. Establishes, monitors, and manages a plan to ensure productivity, operational and financial performance, and patient throughput.
- Develop strategic initiatives necessary to integrate and expand services and population health initiatives, as well as potential new services to meet the growing healthcare needs of the communities CMC and RWJBH serves.
- Enhance the quality, access, safety, and efficiency of patient services and increase patient satisfaction with a focus on performance excellence and high reliability. Leverage the EPIC EHR platform to hardwire best practices and measure results and improvements.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues at Rutgers, including Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and New Jersey Medical School, to align clinical practice, safety, value-based initiatives, research, and medical education.
- Foster robust, meaningful, and mutually beneficial relationships with physician members of CMC. This includes helping to recruit and retain high-quality physicians.
- Mentor and develop team members. Continue to build a pipeline of internal talent and identify innovations that promote talent acquisition.
- Serve as a crucial executive champion for system value-based strategic initiatives, including population health, clinical integration, and value-based outcomes.
- Work closely with the CFO to ensure that operational and growth targets are identified and achieved.
- Established business sense
- Strong business insight, sophisticated knowledge of healthcare funding, and experience in competitive marketplaces with the ability to make complex and difficult decisions.
