Assistant Store Manager – Habitat ReStore (Madison, WI)
Location: Habitat ReStore – East & West Madison
Employment Type: Full-Time
Habitat for Humanity of Dane County is seeking a hands-on Assistant Store Manager to help lead day-to-day operations at our Habitat ReStore locations on both the East and West sides of Madison. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys staying active throughout the day, working alongside staff and volunteers, and helping create a positive experience for customers and donors.
The ReStore sells donated home improvement materials, furniture, appliances, and more to support Habitat for Humanity’s mission of building affordable housing in our community.
This is a very physical, fast-paced retail position that requires frequent lifting, walking, bending, and active involvement in store operations and product movement.
Position Purpose:
The Assistant Store Manager supports the ReStore Manager in overseeing daily store operations and staff. This position is responsible for supervising team members and volunteers, coordinating backroom and sales floor activity, and ensuring a safe and efficient retail environment. The Assistant Store Manager must be capable of performing all supervisory and administrative duties of the manager in their absence.
Key Responsibilities:
Staff Supervision & Leadership
- Supervise 4–12 staff members and volunteers each shift, assigning tasks and providing guidance and training.
- Manage store operations in the absence of the ReStore Manager.
- Train and oversee staff and volunteers participating in the ReStore recycling program.
- Direct backroom activities including the flow of donations from drop-off to pricing and onto the sales floor.
- Evaluate and make decisions regarding donations and pick-up requests.
- Assist customers and donors with questions about merchandise and donations.
- Operate the forklift and other ReStore equipment.
- Oversee cashier operations and provide backup support as needed.
- Open and close registers, perform register counts, prepare daily deposits, and complete end-of-day administrative duties.
- Resolve customer concerns including returns, exchanges, and gift certificates.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe store environment, including processing areas and breakroom.
- Assist with special events at the ReStores.
Physical nature of the Role
This position is highly active and physically demanding. The Assistant Store Manager works directly on the sales floor and in the warehouse throughout the day.

Schedule:
- Tuesday through Saturday 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM. No Sundays, no nights!

Requirements:The role regularly requires:
- Frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds (and occasionally more)
- Continuous walking, bending, squatting, and moving merchandise
- Operating equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks
- Working in varying temperatures and occasional outdoor conditions during donation intake
Candidates should be comfortable working in a hands-on retail and warehouse environment where physical activity is part of daily operations.
Requirements:

- Proficiency with common business software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced team environment.
- Detail-oriented and able to work independently when needed.
- Ability to work professionally with staff, volunteers, donors, and customers of varying skill levels.
- Occasional travel may be required.
- Evening or weekend hours may occasionally be required for special events.

Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of related experience required.
- Retail, customer service, warehouse, or building materials experience preferred.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience.
Certificates & Licenses
- Valid driver’s license required.
