Seasonal Camp Volunteer (Summer) at Kiewit Luminarium – Omaha, Nebraska

Position Summary

Reporting to the Camps Coordinator, the seasonal Camp Volunteer will support Kiewit Luminarium’s six-week summer camp program during June and July 2026 for students entering second through seventh grade. This volunteer position involves supporting daily camp activities, ensuring camper safety and promoting a positive and inclusive camp environment.

This is a great opportunity for someone that is looking for volunteer opportunities in a fun and informal education environment, or someone looking to get volunteer hours during summer break.

Preference will be given to candidates who are available for multiple weeks of the summer camp (weeks of June 8, June 15, June 22, July 6, July 13, and July 20). However, applicants who are available for one or more full camp weeks may still be considered based on program needs. Volunteers must be available Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm for at least one week. Volunteers will be able to work a maximum of three weeks. In the application, please indicate which camp weeks you are available in full.

Essential Functions

• Attend the required training session on May 30th - 31st, and meetings to ensure understanding of camp policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
• Assist campers with camp activities, projects, and daily routines, encouraging engagement.
• Monitor campers during field trips, lunches and break periods, promoting safe play and positive interactions.
• Monitor campers in the classroom to maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment.
• Escort campers to the bathroom breaks, camp office, or designated locations as needed, ensuring safety and appropriate conduct.
• Distribute materials and supplies within the classroom as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience

• Ability to work with children in a professional and enthusiastic manner.
• Demonstrated interest in education, STEM, social sciences, and/or creating positive visitor experiences.
• Minimum age of 16 years old.

Necessary Skills & Characteristics

• Excited to learn new skills, grow professionally, and gain experience in informal education and guest engagement.
• Ability to guide and manage the movement of large groups, such as school field trips, in a safe and engaging manner.
• Ability to support daily classroom operations while fostering a positive, inclusive learning environment.
• Enjoys working with children ages 7 to 13 in engaging, hands-on, and inquiry-based STEM activities.
• Adaptability and problem-solving skills to respond calmly and effectively to unexpected challenges.
• Enthusiasm for science learning, creativity, and the museum’s educational mission.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a friendly and professional demeanor that helps create a welcoming environment for all participants.
• English proficiency is required; bilingual skills (especially Spanish) are highly valued.

Schedule

This is a temporary volunteer role, created for the Luminarium’s summer camp season from June 8, 2026 through July 24, 2026, with a required training the weekend of May 30-31st and a week off the week of June 29, 2026. If volunteers are only for the month of July, there may be a different training date of June 27-28th. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 9am-4pm.

• Ability to move quickly through the museum and spend long periods in the classroom and on the floor.
• Ability to move from place to place and lift/carry up to 40 pounds short distances.
• Ability to perform position functions and must be willing and able to work on-site, in shared indoor and outdoor space with staff and the public following guidelines in accordance with the health department and local ordinances.

Compensation

• This is an unpaid volunteer position.
• Volunteers do not have to commit to the entire summer, however, preference will be given to those that are available to work multiple weeks during camp.
• Complementary Kiewit Luminarium family membership will be offered to seasonal volunteers as a thank you for their service.
