About This Position

Description:

The Shelter Maintenance & Support Specialist is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment throughout the Goodwill Inn shelter by assisting with routine facility operations, performing minor maintenance and repair tasks, and ensuring the proper functioning of all shelter facilities and grounds. In this vital role, the Specialist supports the mission and vision of Goodwill Northern Michigan by upholding the dignity, health, and safety of guests, staff, and community partners, while providing support to shelter operations and guests in a respectful and professional manner.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming shelter environment by performing janitorial duties such as cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, common areas, dining spaces, and offices; sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting assigned areas; and managing trash, recycling, and waste disposal.
  • Support the organizational mission and adhere to all safety policies and procedures, ensuring a secure environment for guests, staff, and community partners.
  • Interact professionally and respectfully with team members, clients, and customers, maintaining confidentiality and valuing diversity among all individuals served by the shelter.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support the mission and vision of Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan.
  • Perform work in a safe manner by observing all Goodwill safety policies and procedures.
  • Interact with all Goodwill team members, clients, and customers in a professional manner.
  • Respect the diversity of others, including but not limited to, those with cultural, ethnic, and gender differences, individuals experiencing homelessness, and persons with visible and non-visible disabilities.
  • Maintain confidentiality of persons served.

Janitorial

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, common areas, dining spaces, and offices.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust all assigned areas.
  • Perform trash collection, recycling, and waste management.
  • Wash windows and glass doors (interior and exterior).
  • Conduct deep cleaning and sanitization on a rotating schedule.
  • Monitor and replenish cleaning and hygiene supplies.

Facility & Maintenance Support

  • Perform light maintenance tasks (e.g., replacing ceiling tiles, touching up paint, tightening fixtures, replacing filters).
  • Assist with landscaping and exterior upkeep (e.g., trimming bushes, clearing walkways).
  • Support maintenance staff with projects and repairs (e.g., moving equipment, cleaning behind appliances, running for parts).
  • Report facility issues promptly and assist in follow-up.
  • Any additional tasks as assigned by Facilities Manager

Shelter Operations Support

  • Maintain daily work logs and communicate progress to Shelter/Facilities Manager.
  • Track supply usage and inform supply coordinator when running low.
  • Support operations through special projects and assigned tasks.
  • Assist as necessary in emergency situations by providing first aid & emergency response activation

Other duties as assigned by the Management Staff.

Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of cleaning products, tools, and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, bend, stoop, and stand for long periods.
  • Comfortable working with a variety of materials, including but not limited to bodily fluids, substances & paraphernalia, sharps, and soiled items.
  • Strong attention to detail, reliability, and time management.
  • Commitment to organizational mission and values.
  • Proficiency in tools, materials, and methods used for building maintenance, including basic carpentry skills and reading a tape measure.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and operation of both power/manual tools and light equipment.
  • Knowledge of industrial cleaning equipment, appliances, and safe disposal of chemical and hazardous materials.
  • Familiarity with landscaping and general handyman practices.
  • Ability to work variable shifts, including weekends and holidays, planning and organizing tasks independently.
  • Strong reading, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to follow basic instructions and work with minimal supervision.
  • Attention to detail, conscientiousness, and close-range visual acuity.
  • Preferred experience with homeless populations and understanding related issues, with background in counseling, human services, housing, substance abuse, or job placement considered a plus.

Physical & Other Requirements:

  • Walk, stand, lift, carry, push, pull, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, turn, walk, and perform repetitive movements throughout the shift.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Able to work at heights on a ladder and on scissor lift.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and occasional heavy lifting exerting 50-100 pounds of force.
  • Work in and out of doors. Some exposure to inclement weather when working out of doors.
  • This position is considered a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to zero tolerance under the Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan Drug Free Workplace Policy.
