About This Position

About The Arc of Butte County

The Arc of Butte County is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Established in 1962, we are committed to promoting the inclusion, empowerment, and independence of people with IDD. Through a wide range of services, including adult day programs, family support, respite care, supported employment, and independent living skills training, we aim to improve the quality of life for those we serve and advocate for their human rights and full participation in society.

At The Arc of Butte County, we strive to create a community where individuals with IDD can live, work, and thrive. Our programs not only offer direct services but also foster a sense of belonging and community engagement. We are passionate about making a difference in the lives of the individuals we support and are looking for dedicated, compassionate team members to join us in this important mission.

About the position

As a Safety Coordinator, you will play a key role in caring for the safety and well-being of our staff and the individuals we serve. This is a new role, and you will partner closely with the Facilities and Fleet team and leadership to build and strengthen our safety program across our Chico and Oroville locations.

You will help us create and maintain supportive systems that keep our workplaces safe, calm, and welcoming. Together with your teammates, you’ll organize inspections, documentation, and training so that everyone feels informed, prepared, and included. This role is a good fit for someone who enjoys collaborating, listening, and helping others feel confident about safety.

This is a full-time position, generally Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with occasional schedule adjustments for special events (such as an occasional Saturday a few times per year).

What You'll Do:

  • Partner with leadership to coordinate all aspects of The Arc of Butte County’s safety program
  • Develop, update, and maintain required safety plans and documentation, including:
  • Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)
  • Workplace Violence Prevention Plan
  • Bloodborne Pathogens training and documentation
  • OSHA reporting and recordkeeping
  • Coordinate safety training for staff, including scheduling, tracking completion, and maintaining training documentation
  • Conduct routine safety inspections, walkthroughs, and observations to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance
  • Maintain organized IIPP documentation, logs, and records to support ongoing safety efforts
  • Track and document incidents, near-misses, and corrective actions to support continuous improvement
  • Support safety-related investigations by gathering facts, documentation, and statements in a respectful and objective manner
  • Coordinate or conduct regular safety inspections and ensure accurate records, including:
  • Commercial kitchen systems (Ansel system, hood, fire alarm, dishwasher chlorine levels, water temperatures)
  • Exit lights and emergency lighting
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Fleet vehicle safety inspections
  • Facility and site safety inspections
  • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures
  • Maintain logs, schedules, and follow-up documentation to ensure inspections and corrective actions are completed on time
  • Distribute safety communications, reminders, and updates to staff in clear, supportive ways
  • Monitor the availability and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) across worksites
  • Serve as a point of contact for employee safety questions, concerns, and reports
  • Maintain current Safety Data Sheet (SDS) binders and ensure they are accessible to staff
  • Recommend tools, systems, or software to support safety tracking, training, inspections, and reporting
  • Collaborate closely with the Maintenance/Facilities team across multiple sites to support shared safety goals
  • Assist the Facilities department with related tasks when safety priorities allow
  • Adjust schedule as needed a few times per year to support special events
  • Model and promote a positive, safety-conscious culture grounded in trust, communication, and mutual respect
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What You'll Bring:

We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every single qualification. We value both professional and lived experience.

  • A strong commitment to The Arc of Butte County’s mission and to the safety, dignity, and inclusion of people with disabilities.
  • A caring, patient approach when working with staff, families, and the individuals we serve.
  • Experience in safety, risk management, facility safety, or a related field (in nonprofit, industrial, healthcare, government, or similar environments).
  • Comfort learning and growing in the role, and asking questions when something is new or unclear.
  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills, including attention to detail and reliable follow-through on safety issues.
  • Clear, respectful communication skills and the ability to explain safety concepts in a supportive, easy-to-understand way.
  • Enjoy working as part of a team, sharing ideas, and collaborating on solutions with honesty and reliability.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience helping to shape or support a safety program.
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations, IIPP, workplace violence prevention plans, and safety training programs.
  • Experience using tools or software to stay organized with safety inspections, training, or reporting.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel locally to meet with staff, visit facilities, or attend events, including regular travel to our Oroville location.
  • Ability to work in various environments, including office and community/facility settings.
  • Ability to perform essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • May require occasional lifting (up to 30–40 lbs), standing, walking, bending, or assisting with physical tasks related to inspections or facilities support.
  • Work environment may include exposure to pet allergens. The Arc of Butte County maintains a pet-friendly culture, and animals (such as the office cat) may occasionally be present in the workplace. Employees may also encounter pet allergens through donated items or community environments.

Equal Opportunity Employer:

The Arc of Butte County is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to hiring individuals based on their qualifications and experience, and we welcome applications from all qualified individuals, regardless of gender, age, race, ethnicity, disability, or other protected status. We are dedicated to creating a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace where everyone feels they belong.
