Position Summary

The Statewide Director of Nursing (DON) is a senior nursing executive responsible for overseeing nursing operations, clinical quality, compliance, and performance across correctional healthcare facilities statewide.
This role ensures consistent delivery of safe, effective, and efficient patient care and provides leadership to Health Services Administrators (HSAs), Directors of Nursing (DONs), and nursing teams across the state. The Statewide DON partners with Health Services Administrators (HSAs), Regional Operations, and Quality teams to execute statewide
clinical strategies and achieve performance targets.

Minimum Qualifications & Preferred CredentialsRequired
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state.
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical experience in a healthcare setting. (correctional experience preferred but not required).
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience overseeing nursing functions or clinical operations.
  • Strong knowledge of nursing regulations, clinical practices, and adult patient care.
  • Ability to lead large teams across multiple facilities and drive statewide initiatives.
Preferred
  • MSN degree.
  • Correctional healthcare experience.
  • Experience supervising DONs or managing multi-site clinical operations.
  • Certification such as CCHP or CCHP-RN.
  • Experience with NCCHC, ACA, and state-specific accreditation standards.
  • Experience with QAPI, clinical audits, and quality improvement programs.
Essential Job Functions Statewide Clinical Leadership
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for nursing services statewide.
  • Support facility HSA’s and DONs.
  • Supervise clinical specialty team (Statewide ICN, Statewide educator, Statewide trainer, Statewide dietician, Statewide MOUD coordinator)
  • Ensure consistent implementation of policies and best practices.
Quality Oversight & Performance Improvement
  • Review statewide clinical data and audit findings for improvement.
  • Lead statewide clinical quality and QAPI initiatives.
  • Ensure facilities meet key performance indicators.
  • -Lead statewide infection control activities.
Compliance & Accreditation
  • Conduct statewide accreditation readiness activities.
  • Monitor facility compliance with NCCHC, ACA, and state standards.
  • Develop and implement corrective action plans as needed.
Staffing & Workforce Development
  • Support recruitment and hiring standards for all facilities.
  • Oversee statewide competency assessments and training programs.
  • Provide leadership coaching and succession planning.
Regulatory, Licensing & Documentation Oversight
  • Ensure statewide compliance with licensure, credentialing, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide guidance on nursing regulations across facilities.
Operational Leadership & Coordination
  • Collaborate with statewide leadership on staffing and resource allocation.
  • Participate in strategic planning and statewide meetings.
  • Proactively address clinical and operational issues.
Collaboration & Representation
  • Represent statewide nursing operations in committees and initiatives.
  • Serve as liaison to external agencies and partners.
