Job Description

At Index Exchange, we’re reinventing how digital advertising works—at scale. We are a globally trusted independent supply-side platform, powering intelligent decisioning to maximize value for media owners and deliver stronger outcomes for buyers.
We’re a proud industry pioneer with over 20 years of experience accelerating the ad technology evolution. Our proprietary tech is trusted by some of the world’s largest brands and media owners and plays a crucial role in keeping the internet open, accessible, and largely free.
We process more than 550 billion real-time auctions every day (in comparison, Google processes about 14 billion searches per day) with ultra-low latency. Our platform is vertically integrated from servers to networks and runs on our own metal and cloud infrastructure. This end-to-end infrastructure is designed to provide both stability and agility, enabling us to adapt quickly as the market evolves.
At the core of it all is our engineering-first culture. Our engineers tackle internet-scale problems across tight-knit, global teams. From moving petabytes of data and optimizing with AI to making real-time infrastructure decisions, Indexers have the agency and influence to shape the future of advertising. We move fast, build thoughtfully, and stay grounded in our core values.

About the role:
We’re looking for a Staff Platform Engineer to help architect and build the foundational infrastructure powering Index Cloud—a globally distributed, multi-tenant compute platform that supports both our exchange workloads and the broader partner ecosystem.
This position reports directly to [insert manager title/name] based in [insert location] and will work closely with members of the Cloud Platform Engineering, Cloud Platform Operations, SRE, Network, Security, and Software Engineering teams.

What we’re looking for:
We’re looking for a highly experienced platform engineer who is passionate about solving large-scale distributed systems challenges and building infrastructure platforms that empower engineering teams to move faster.
You thrive in environments with complex technical problems, think deeply about systems design and developer experience, and bring strong architectural leadership across teams. You’re equally comfortable designing Kubernetes infrastructure, building internal platform tooling, and influencing long-term technical strategy.

Here’s what you’ll be doing:
  • Design and deliver multi-tenant Kubernetes infrastructure across bare-metal and public cloud environments (EKS, GKE)
  • Build and evolve infrastructure-as-code frameworks that manage deployments across thousands of servers
  • Develop standard libraries, internal SDKs, platform APIs, and self-service tooling used by engineering teams across the organization
  • Architect scalable, globally distributed systems that support real-time bidding workloads with sub-millisecond overhead
  • Drive technical direction through RFCs, design reviews, and architectural decision-making
  • Establish standards for shared platform domains including tooling, security posture, and system design
  • Build “golden paths” and developer enablement tooling that improve engineering velocity and reliability
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Cloud Platform Operations, SRE, Network, Security, and Software Engineering teams
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to a strong culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement
Here's what you need:
  • Deep expertise in Linux internals including kernel tuning, networking, observability, and security
  • Strong Kubernetes experience including cluster lifecycle management, networking, storage, RBAC, and multi-cluster environments across bare-metal and cloud platforms
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, Ansible, and GitOps workflows (ArgoCD or similar)
  • Proficiency in Go, Python, or both, with experience building libraries, SDKs, and platform APIs
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals (L2–L7), load balancing, DNS, and service discovery
  • Experience working with bare-metal infrastructure in globally distributed data centers
  • 8+ years of experience in platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, SRE, or DevOps
  • Demonstrated ability to influence technical strategy and drive alignment across multiple teams
Nice to have:
  • Experience with distributed storage systems such as Ceph
  • Familiarity with big data infrastructure including Hadoop, Spark, HBase, and Kafka
  • Experience designing and operating observability platforms using Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Mimir, Loki, or Tempo
  • Experience with secrets management, certificate management, and access control systems at scale
  • Exposure to hybrid cloud architectures spanning AWS, GCP, and on-premises infrastructure
Who thrives here:
You’re someone who:
  • Enjoys understanding how complex distributed systems behave and fail
  • Treats operational readiness as a core engineering responsibility
  • Prefers building scalable abstractions over solving the same problem repeatedly
  • Can influence and align teams through strong technical leadership
  • Finds satisfaction in improving the productivity and experience of other engineers

Why you’ll love working here:
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision plans for you and your dependents
  • Paid time off, health days, and personal obligation days plus flexible work schedules
  • Competitive retirement matching plans
  • Equity packages
  • Generous parental leave available to birthing, non-birthing, and adoptive parents
  • Annual well-being allowance plus fitness discounts and group wellness activities
  • Commuter benefits and discounts, where available
  • Employee assistance program
  • Mental health first aid program that provides an in-the-moment point of contact and reassurance
  • One day of volunteer time off per year and a donation-matching program
  • Bi-weekly town halls and regular community-led team events
  • Multiple resources and programming to support continuous learning
  • A workplace that supports a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment – learn more here
