About This Position
Device Fabrication and Electrical Characterization Scientist
1193-383
The successful candidate will research, fabricate, and characterize wide bandgap (WBG) and ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductor devices for logic, power, and RF electronics operating in extreme temperature and radiation environments. This role combines cleanroom microfabrication, advanced electrical testing across temperature, and physics-based modeling to connect device behavior to material properties and defects.
- Research and evaluate WBG/UWBG semiconductor materials and device concepts for logic, power, and RF applications in high-temperature and radiation environments.
- Design and fabricate test structures and devices using microfabrication processes, including:
- Photolithography (and/or e-beam as applicable)
- Metallization and liftoff
- Atomic layer deposition (ALD)
- Reactive ion etching (RIE) / dry etch processing
- Perform electrical characterization of semiconductor devices and test structures, such as:
- Diodes, transistors, and MIS capacitors
- I–V and C–V measurements
- Temperature-dependent electrical testing (e.g., cryo to high temperature as relevant)
- Develop and apply physics-based device/material models to interpret data and explain performance trends under temperature and radiation stressors.
- Extract and correlate key material/device parameters (e.g., mobility, carrier density, conductivity, interface/defect density, contact resistance) with measured device behavior.
- Document experimental methods and results; prepare internal reports, manuscripts, and/or conference presentations as needed.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (materials growth, processing, modeling, reliability/radiation testing) to drive device iteration and improvement.
*This position is designed to be flexible, with responsibilities evolving to meet business needs and enable individual growth.
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Hands-on experience with semiconductor device fabrication in a cleanroom environment.
- Proficiency in one or more of: lithography, metallization/liftoff, ALD, RIE/dry etch.
- Experience performing electrical characterization of semiconductor devices (I–V, C–V; parameter extraction).
- Solid foundation in semiconductor device physics (transport, contacts, interfaces, defects/traps).
- Ability to build or implement physics-based models and interpret experimental results (e.g., using MATLAB, Python, TCAD, or similar).
- Strong documentation, communication, and data analysis skills.
