Lifeguard at Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District – Littleton, Colorado

This Job Description outlines the basic requirements, duties, and general responsibilities of the position of Lifeguard. Unless modified by a written Employment Agreement, this position is “at-will,” which means the Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District (“District”) may terminate the employment relationship at any time and for no reason, subject only to the requirements of federal and state law. Similarly, the employee may terminate the employment relationship without notice at any time for no reason.

Lifeguards work under the direct supervision of the Aquatics and Community Supervisor, Aquatics and Community Coordinator and Staff Supervisor. Daily hours range from 5:30 am to 10:00 pm, with some hours earlier or later for special events or swim meets. Lifeguards are responsible for providing a safe and clean environment and an enjoyable experience for our guests. Lifeguards will also perform the duties of Guest Service- Aquatics when necessary.

The following duties are an overview of the primary duties and responsibilities of a Lifeguard and should not be considered an all-inclusive list.

A. Provides supervision/surveillance of all patrons in the pool area at all times; Interacts with customers in a professional manner regarding emergencies, safety, violations, and other customer service issues.

B. Demonstrates lifeguarding skills, knowledge, and execution to exceed industry standards.

C. Reacts calmly and immediately to emergencies and administers proper care; provides emergency care and treatment until EMS arrives.

D. Supervises swimming activities at the aquatics facility and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.

E. Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces pool regulations and water safety policies.

F. Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.

G. Evaluate conditions for safety and initiate the aquatics emergency action plan as required.

H. Inspects pool facilities, equipment, and water to ensure that they are safe and usable.

I. Always enforces pool rules and policies; utilizes appropriate communication devices such as whistles, hand signals, and written and spoken words; completes daily and required documents legibly and professionally.

J. Performs daily pool cleaning and maintenance duties, including but not limited to regular cleaning of strainer baskets, vacuuming, and skimming the pool, cleaning deck and grass areas, emptying trash receptacles, cleaning restrooms, and maintaining the overall cleanliness of the facility.

K. Attend at least 4 hours of in-service a month, along with any other required training or meetings.

L. Consistently promote a positive, professional image of the District and provide excellent customer service at all times.

M. Tracks admissions and utilizes the software system for all registrations, payments, memberships, and rentals.

N. Responsible for adhering to cash handling procedures to ensure that all transactions are accounted for appropriately.

O. Greet and assist patrons who walk in; answer questions, provide general customer service; resolve issues or direct to another staff member.

P. Provides excellent first-point-of-contact customer service to guests.

Q. Responsible for cleaning/maintenance of admissions hut and surrounding areas.

1. Must be at least 15 years of age by the first day of Lifeguard Training.

1. Ability to maintain knowledge of CPR, Rescue Breathing, First Aid, and all other emergency care and treatment at test-ready levels and ability to react competently, calmly, and effectively in emergency situations.

2. Effective and clear written and oral communicator with a variety of audiences, including staff, the community, and supervisors.

3. Ability to problem solve in challenging situations.

4. Ability to work a schedule that will include evenings, early mornings, weekends and holidays as conditions or programming schedules might dictate; Must have the ability to be flexible and be able to adapt to changing daily schedules based on timelines and facility needs.

5. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language at a level adequate to perform the job.

6. Working in a variety of locations and sometimes in challenging weather conditions.

7. Develop and maintain relationships with District employees, volunteers, the community, public agencies, and the private sector; ability to work with children of all ages.

1. Applicants must hold a current, valid lifeguard certification that meets Colorado requirements prior to beginning employment. Certification may be obtained through any approved StarGuard Elite provider. The District offers a free certification course to anyone interested in the community. Participation in the District’s free certification course is purely voluntary and does not guarantee consideration for the position.

2. You must be able to work a minimum of 18 hours a week for the duration of the season May 30- Aug 16, and then a minimum of 8 hours a week from Aug 16 – Sept 7.

3. Must be willing to work at all three seasonal pools throughout the summer.

Working Environment

1. Moderate physical activity will be required frequently.

2. Work will be required outdoors in all weather conditions.

3. Work may be required under hazardous and adverse conditions, including, but not limited to, slippery and uneven surfaces and proximity to moving mechanical equipment.

4. Use of sensory activities, such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling (identifying objects by touch), depth perception, and color vision, will be required frequently.

5. Work will involve periods of high physical, mental, and/or emotional stress.

Physical Requirements

1. Have the ability to lift, move, and carry objects more than fifty (50) pounds frequently.

2. Have the ability to stand, walk, sit, kneel, stoop, bend, lift, squat, push, pull, crawl, jump, slide, climb, pinch, grip, reach overhead, reach away from the body, and perform repetitive motions.

3. Be able to work evenings, holidays, and weekends as needed.
