PURPOSE: This position will facilitate and support SEIU’s change effort to become an anti-racist organization; developing and scaling up effective education and engagement, anti-racial change strategies and programs, and facilitating the development of racially just organizational practices, policies and systems.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed. Examples provide a general summary of the work required and should not be treated as a total and complete list of expected duties to be performed by employees in the classification.

  • The primary responsibility of this position is to lead capacity building efforts targeted at developing the ability of SEIU’s various locals, programs and departments to effectively implement, monitor and evaluate progress towards becoming an anti-racist organization.
  • Identify, convene and facilitate collaborations and design efforts around campaigns, programs and efforts that advance anti-racist organizational practices, policies and systems..
  • Work with specified Union departments, locals, BOLD consultants, etc. to develop and integrate robust racial justice change strategies and practices.
  • Analyze/assess capacity building needs.
  • Provide input on relevant performance indicators and evaluations to reflect progress (quantitative and qualitative).
  • Participate in program monitoring, evaluation, and periodic reporting.
  • Stay abreast of key developments in the anti-racist organizational transformation movements AND/OR organizational development, capacity building, human resource and leadership development fields to incorporate innovations into the BOLD Center’s approach.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with racial justice movement, capacity building and organizational changes partners.
  • Connect union partners with external partners as needed.
  • Facilitate the sharing of experiences, dissemination of successful practices, and fostering of a learning culture.
  • Compile, develop and update written resources and templates.
  • Ensure coherence and mutual reinforcement of specific projects as they fit into advancing the Union’s overall racial justice strategy and approach.
  • Work collaboratively with the BOLD Center team to develop and define its programs and strategies.

CONTACTS: Must be able to work with elected leaders and staff in complex and sometimes political situations. Must be able to handle multiple priority projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines.

DIRECTION & DECISION MAKING: A high level of judgment, ability to take initiative and work independently is required. Reports to the Director and/or Deputy Director of the SEIU BOLD Center.

QUALIFICATIONS & PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in economics, race studies, political science, organizational development or a related field, and three years of experience implementing and leading racial justice change programs including two years in a capacity-building and coordination role; or, a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Program or project management background that involved developing and executing complex project timelines, coordinating multiple projects, and prioritizing tasks.
  • Substantive experience helping organizations achieve impact through capacity building and organizational change.
  • Significant experience within communities of color – Black communities, in particular.
  • Excellent writing, verbal and analytical skills with a particular ability to communicate complex ideas in clear, concise terms.
  • Strong structural and anti-Black racial justice analysis that corresponds with SEIU’s adopted racial justice analysis, conclusions and approaches.
  • Solid understanding of the issues involved in organizing for economic and social justice, and a strong commitment to meeting the particular challenges facing communities-of-color, especially Black communities.
  • Broad knowledge of systems thinking, organizational development, capacity building and change management theories, methods and approaches.
  • Have knowledge and practices for racial justice to offer, as well as enjoy and be open to learning from others, incorporating new perspectives, issues, and experiences and taking risks.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively, build consensus and cooperate with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Experience developing and facilitating partnerships among diverse teams, groups and leaders.
  • Experience supporting colleagues from a distance.
  • Ability to work in a team, share information and contribute to the routine tasks of the team.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have the ability to work in an office (or similar) setting with or without reasonable accommodation. Travel in addition to long and extended work hours are required.
