About This Position
The Head Counselor Position is a leadership and supervisory role within Washington Montessori Summer Camp.This position is ideal for camp or education professionals with previous experience at day camps or in classrooms and who desire a leadership position. A Head Counselor oversees a whole division of camp, and reports to the Camp Director for guidance and duties. The Head Counselor in turn provides guidance and feedback to the Counselors, and Junior Counselors assigned to their division.
Responsibilities:
- Ensuring the physical and emotional safety of all campers and staff in the division.
- Supporting a team of Counselors and Junior Counselors assigned to a specific age group or division.
- Upholding and enforcing camp policies, safety standards, and emergency procedures
- Managing program-specific supplies and equipment,
- Organizing, and overseeing daily schedules and activities for their division, ensuring alignment school’s mission and the camps standards
- Reporting injuries and accidents in a timely manner to the Camp Director, First Aid Manager, or if required the Office of Early Childhood
- Performing additional duties as assigned by Camp Director
Requirements:
- Strong understanding of youth development principles and group management.
- Strong understanding of safety, health, and risk management practices for youth programs as laid out by the Connecticut Department of Early Childhood
- Basic First Aid and CPR (training provided and required by the Camp)
- Strong Knowledge of summer camp activities and facilitation styles.
- Advanced group and classroom management skills.
- Basic First Aid and CPR certification (training provided and required by the camp).
- Aquatic supervision skills.
- Coaching and sports facilitation.
- Ability to effectively lead a group of young counselors
- Ability to remain calm, patient, flexible, and organized in a busy and sometimes unpredictable environment.
- Ability to prioritize and delegate tasks independently to effectively utilize camp resources.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude and high energy level throughout the camp day.
- Reliable transportation to and from the camp each morning and afternoon assigned to work.
- Physical ability to participate in active games and outdoor activities, including standing, walking, running, and lifting light equipment.
Working Conditions:
This is a seasonal, part-time position. Work is performed primarily outdoors and in program spaces on the WMS campus. Head Counselors are expected to be present and engaged for the full duration of each assigned shift (Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM) during the camp session. The role involves active physical participation and direct supervision of children in a dynamic, outdoor camp environment.
