Job Summary
The Business Unit Controller is responsible for managing the accounting process for an assigned business unit, including month-end close, financial reporting, forecasting, and budget support. The Controller serves as the primary financial partner to business unit leadership while ensuring compliance with corporate accounting policies and GAAP. This role owns the business unit books, leads the BU accounting team, supports operational decision-making, and partners closely with Corporate Finance for consolidation, controls, and reporting alignment. This position reports to the Director of Accounting and typically has 2 more direct reports.
Key Job Responsibilities:
· Reliable attendance and punctuality.
· Manage all aspects of the business unit general ledger, including month-end close.
· Prepare and review monthly business unit financial statements.
· Ensure accurate balance sheet reconciliations for BU-owned accounts.
· Responsible for hiring, training, performance management, and termination of staff.
· Supervise, coach, and develop business unit accounting staff.
· Assign ownership for close tasks, reconciliations, and reporting deliverables.
· Ensure consistency, discipline, and adherence to timelines within the BU accounting team, including monthly safety training deadlines.
· Partner with Accounting and Finance to support consolidated reporting and close timelines.
· Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
· Prepare and manage monthly forecasts, including rolling outlooks.
· Coordinate and support the annual business unit budget process.
· Provide variance analysis versus forecast and budget.
· Support EBITDA tracking and reporting at the business unit level.
· Provide monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial analysis for the business unit.
· Partner with operations and business unit leadership on performance, margins, and cost management.
· Compile and present financial information for business reviews.
· Assist local operators with business unit financial reporting and analysis.
· Establish and maintain effective internal controls at the business unit level.
· Ensure compliance with corporate policies and procedures.
· Support audit requests related to the business unit.
· Research accounting issues and ensure appropriate GAAP treatment in coordination with Corporate Finance.
· Other duties assigned by supervisor.
Key Performance Measurements:
· A scorecard that measures timely and accurate month end close, forecast accuracy, budget discipline, GAAP compliance, internal controls, and audit support.
· Development and performance of the accounting team.
· Other key performance indicators as assigned.
Requirements:Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field (master’s preferred) or CPA.
· 5+ years’ experience in accounting.
· Must pass a background check and drug screen.
· Strong understanding of GAAP and month-end close processes.
· ERP experience required (integration experience a plus).
· Prior experience managing or reviewing work of accounting staff.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
· Strong communication, problem solving, and analytical skills.
· Ability to organize his/her own work and work independently, with limited supervision.
· Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with diverse needs, and across remote offices and improve processes.
· Ability to clearly articulate ideas (both written and verbal) to the accounting team and management.
· Previous experience managing projects and/or team members preferred.
· Ability to adapt to a fast-changing environment.
· Team leadership abilities.
· Travel up to 10%, may require overnight travel, especially for acquisitions.
