About This Position
JOB FUNCTION:
A Terminal Yard Spotter is a person who drives tractor trailer trucks within a yard or space, hooks up trailers to tractors, unhooks trailers, and organizes trailers and tractors within a company's yard space. The greatest aspect of trailer spotting is the hostler or “yard mule” – the special tractor that moves and organizes fully-loaded semi-trailers around a freight yard or warehouse. The Yard Driver communicates and interacts with co-workers and vendors professionally ensuring all services and duties are executed in accordance with preferred work methods and customer service practices. Functions as a team member within the department and organization, as required, and perform any duty assigned to best serve the company.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible to maintain a neat and orderly storage lot oriented toward maximizing efficiency in servicing the yard’s needs.
- Operate Yard Truck in a safe manner during numerous roll-on/roll-off procedures daily involving loaded and empty containers.
- Drive and operate vehicle under 15 mph in and around the terminal and storage lot/staging area.
- Be cognizant of the reality that the operation is a low mileage severe duty function requiring particular attention to preventive maintenance checks and services as well as actual scheduled vehicle maintenance.
- Must be aware that operations occur on asphalt, concrete and gravel surfaces in a hostile environment often contaminated with material subject to embedding in tires.
- Responsible for accounting for records involving container numbers, and Trailer numbers.
- Must function and interact daily with Yard/ Warehouse personnel and comply with plant safety requirements.
- Communicate using cellular telephone or 2-way radio with dispatch, terminal, and Warehouse personnel.
- Security of valuable commodities and the storage area itself are a major area of concern for the Yard Jockey, occasionally requiring guidance from supervisory personnel regarding disposition.
- Duties and Tasks as assigned by Management.
BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Most employers require yard truck switchers to have a current Driver’s License or with preference, a CDL Class A or Class B. Yard Spotters should possess adequate communication skills to understand written and spoken instructions, excellent safety awareness and a sufficient level of physical fitness, as the job involves some manual labor.
- At least 23 years of age
- Valid Non-expired Driver’s License or CDL Class A or B
- (2) years of verifiable tractor-trailer driving experience in the last 5 years
- (3) years DMV/MVR record with two or fewer moving violations/accidents
- Must pass background and drug testing as required by federal and/or state department(s) of transportation regulations.

Route/Activity – Our Yard spotter will be responsible for yard and trailer movements within the yard. Yard spotter's will be utilized as a driver during volume spike and driver need.
