Earlham School of Religion is seeking an Assistant Professor of Spiritual and Pastoral Care to join our team!
Position SummaryThe Assistant Professor in Spiritual and Pastoral Care plays a key role at Earlham School of Religion, a Quaker seminary in Richmond, Indiana, in preparing students for chaplaincy and other caregiving-focused ministries.
This full-time position combines graduate-level teaching with student mentorship in areas related to pastoral care, spiritual formation, and practical theology. The faculty member will teach a range of introductory and advanced courses, contribute to interdisciplinary programs and coordinate chaplaincy education, including Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) partnerships.
This appointment begins on July 1, 2026 and is reviewed annually, with initial appointment eligible for renewal up to five years ending on June 30, 2031, depending on funding. It requires up to four weeks of in person teaching per year and participation in key institutional events, with relocation preferred but remote work possible.
Primary Duties & ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Instruction- Teach a combination of introductory and advanced graduate‑level courses in spiritual and pastoral care.
- Deliver the introductory course in spiritual and pastoral care.
- Teach courses essential for preparing individuals for a ministry of caring, including Death and Dying and Trauma‑Informed Ministry.
- Carry a standard teaching load of six courses per academic year.
- Teach courses that contribute to other portions of the curriculum as needed, with the possibility of teaching occasional undergraduate classes.
- Coordinate chaplaincy education, including Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) partnerships and other partnerships or programs.
Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications- PhD, preferred.
- ABD candidates considered if the degree will be completed within one year of employment.
- Master of Divinity or another accredited seminary degree desired.
- Extensive experience in chaplaincy, particularly CPE or other forms of caregiving, is preferred.
- Demonstrated teaching ability with ability to teach in face-to-face, synchronous video (Zoom), and online learning environments. ESR offers these courses during the normal academic year in these formats, as well as intensives in August, January, and May.
- Ability to work with a theologically diverse student body.
