About This Position

Reports to the Vice President of Operations. Manages the Patient Transport department staff and routine operations for assigned shifts, including the productivity of staff and information systems processes. Ensures that all transport activities are performed safely, efficiently, and according to established policies and procedures to support timely patient movement and hospital throughput.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides overall leadership and management of the Patient Transport department, overseeing daily operations and ensuring timely response to all transport requests.
  • Assigns work, manages schedules, and directs the activities of Patient Transport staff to optimize productivity and patient flow.
  • Monitors staff productivity, maintains accurate payroll records, and approves attendance tracking.
  • Identifies hiring needs, participates in interviewing, orienting, and evaluating performance of staff while recommending corrective action when necessary.
  • Identifies ongoing training needs and ensures staff receive regular in-service education appropriate for transport duties.
  • Organizes and implements preventive maintenance programs for transport equipment and coordinates repairs.
  • Assists with cost analysis of equipment and implements new procedures as approved.
  • Ensures employees use safe work techniques in accordance with OSHA, State, Federal regulations, and hospital policies.
  • Investigates and reports incidents involving patients, employees, visitors, clients, and transporters.
  • Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships while helping to identify problems, offering solutions, and participating in their resolution.
  • Completes other job-related assignments and special projects as directed.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • Associate’s degree preferred. Prior supervisory or leadership experience in a hospital or healthcare setting strongly preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrates leadership, interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) necessary to supervise staff in daily operations and to interact effectively with staff, physicians, patients, visitors and other contacts.
  • Basic computer skills.

Working Conditions

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous substances, chemicals and other conditions common to a hospital.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
