Job Description:
Do you have a big heart and a passion for helping animals in need? Join the team as an Animal Shelter Attendant at Chesapeake Animal Services.

As an Animal Shelter Attendant, you’ll work alongside a supportive, team-oriented staff to meet the daily care needs of our animals. You’ll be feeding, watering, and assisting with medications and vaccinations, all while helping maintain a safe, clean, and nurturing environment.

You’ll also serve as a key point of connection for the community, providing excellent customer service, supporting adoptions, and helping reunite lost pets with their families.

In this role, you’ll grow your animal care knowledge, gain valuable hands-on experience, and be part of a workplace that values teamwork, professionalism, and ongoing development.

Essential Tasks
of the Shelter Attendant:
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary
  • Provides general care for animals in the shelter, including watering, feeding, grooming, performing routine tests and exams, and wound treatment.
  • Cleans cages/kennels housing animals.
  • Responsible for disease recognition, wound treatment, and records maintenance.
  • Work according to some procedures; decides how and when to do things under general supervision.
  • Performs daily inspections of animals; completing an animal count and sick list.
  • Administers prescription medication under direction of a veterinarian and routinely gives vaccinations and determines movement of animals into adoption areas.
  • Interacts with the public to provide information on shelter animals and assist with adoptions.
  • Transports animals to a veterinarian or groomer as directed.
  • Assists in euthanasia as directed by a Supervisor.
  • Performs maintenance on the building as directed.
  • Performs routine record keeping and animal intakes.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Vocational/Educational Requirement: Requires high school diploma or GED/HSE.

Experience: In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.

Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

As such, applicants for this position are subject to pre-employment drug/alcohol testing after receiving a conditional offer of employment and may also be subject to random testing. Possession of a medical marijuana card will not excuse an applicant from the testing process; however, a test will not be considered positive for marijuana if a valid medical marijuana certification is presented unless the position requires a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or is a sworn law-enforcement officer/deputy.
