Position Overview:
The Unarmed Security Officer plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, orderly, and supportive environment within a congregate shelter setting serving individuals experiencing homelessness. This position is responsible for conducting non-invasive safety searches, preventing contraband from entering or circulating within the facility, coordinating closely with shelter management and medical staff, and serving as a key liaison with local emergency services when needed.
Unarmed Security Officers operate with professionalism, discretion, and a trauma-informed approach, prioritizing dignity, safety, and de-escalation at all times. This role is unarmed and non-law-enforcement, focused on prevention, coordination, and situational awareness rather than enforcement.
Please note: At this time, this is a 5-month contract with no benefits, beginning November 2025 and operating through end of March 2026. There may be an opportunity for contract extension after the 5-month period ends.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Access Control & Safety Screening
Conduct safety-focused searches of individuals and personal belongings upon entry to the facility in accordance with established policies and proceduresEnsure all new arrivals complete the required safety screening prior to proceeding to intakeIdentify and prevent prohibited or dangerous items (“contraband”) from entering the facilityConduct periodic safety checks or secondary searches of bags or personal belongings of individuals already onsite when required to maintain facility safetyEnsure all searches are conducted respectfully, professionally, and in a trauma-informed mannerContraband & Property Handling
Secure prohibited items in accordance with facility policyProperly document and dispose of contraband that cannot be retained or returnedSecure weapons or other restricted items in designated storage when permitted by policy, and ensure proper chain-of-custody documentationCoordinate the safe return of secured personal property to individuals upon exit from the facility, when appropriateFacility Safety & Monitoring
Maintain a visible presence throughout the facility to promote safety and deter unsafe behaviorConduct regular patrols of dormitories, common areas, restrooms, and exterior areas as assignedMonitor for safety hazards, conflicts, or escalating situations and respond appropriatelyEnforce facility safety rules consistently and professionallyCoordination with Shelter & Medical Staff
Work closely with Shelter Managers, Operations Supervisors, and onsite EMTs to ensure coordinated responses to incidents or safety concernsEnsure individuals who require medical attention are promptly referred to onsite medical staffSupport shelter operations by facilitating orderly movement of individuals to intake, services, or exits when requiredCommunicate clearly with staff during incidents, shift changes, and daily operationsIncident Response & Emergency Coordination
Serve as a first point of coordination during safety or security incidentsUtilize de-escalation techniques to calm tense situations whenever possibleInitiate 911 calls when required and provide clear, accurate information to emergency dispatchersCoordinate with responding law enforcement, EMS, or fire personnel to ensure they are fully briefed upon arrivalAssist emergency responders with scene access, crowd control, and situational awareness as neededDocument all incidents, confiscations, injuries, or emergency responses according to policyDocumentation & Communication
Complete written incident reports and logs accurately and in a timely mannerMaintain clear radio or phone communication with shelter leadership and staff throughout shiftsParticipate in shift briefings, safety huddles, and handoffsRequired Knowledge & Skills
Strong situational awareness and observational skillsAbility to remain calm and professional in high-stress situationsDemonstrated de-escalation and conflict management skillsUnderstanding of trauma-informed care principlesAbility to interact respectfully with individuals from diverse backgroundsClear verbal and written communication skillsAbility to follow established procedures and maintain confidentialityRequired Education & Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent requiredPrior experience in security, shelter operations, social services, or a related field preferredExperience working with homeless populations or vulnerable individuals strongly preferredDe-escalation, crisis intervention, or conflict management training preferredRequirements of Employment:
Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident for at least the past five (5) years to comply with federal regulationsMust be available for 24/7 on-call responsibilities and flexible scheduling including nights, weekends, and holidaysMust be at least 21 years of age. Must be able to speak, read, and write in EnglishMust possess reliable transportation and valid driver's licenseMust be able to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidaysMust successfully complete required background checks and drug screening as permitted by lawMust be able to stand and walk for extended periodsMust be able to lift and move items up to 40–50 pounds as requiredMust be able to perform searches consistent with policy and trainingSecurity Clearance/Background Check Requirements:
Must show proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. Internal background check to the satisfaction of contract requirements.Complete a Drug Test. Child Abuse/ Neglect Report (CAN) or child protective services check with no adverse findings.Physical Requirements:
