Overview
The Office of Communications promotes and protects Princeton University’s reputation for excellence. In partnership with offices across campus, we tell the University’s story across many media channels. The multimedia team in Communications utilizes design, photography and video to create compelling, focused narratives that connect with key audiences and advance the University’s most important priorities.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Multimedia, the Visual Designer will be a core member of the multimedia team and play an important role in team projects, solo projects and support tasks including but not limited to editing, formatting, coordination, implementation and administration. The Visual Designer is responsible for supporting polished visual assets across presentations, reports, social media, video, web and print production. This role contributes to and implements designs through strong execution, collaborative ideation and careful attention to detail across digital and print platforms.
Responsibilities
Design and visual development
• Create high-quality presentation decks for University leadership (PowerPoint, Google Slides, or other similar programs)
• Support the Senior Visual Designer in the design, formatting and editing of reports (layout, typography, charts, infographics, adjusting copy after multiple rounds of review)
• Design and develop branded social media graphics
• Support the Senior Visual Designer in the design and production of campaign visuals across multiple formats and sizes
• Ensure visual consistency across digital and print channels
Web and homepage content support
• Layout award announcements, campus partner stories and general University homepage news using the Drupal platform
• Support the website layout and graphic needs of Inside Princeton
• Support the layout and graphic needs of newsletters produced by the Office of Communications
• Select, crop, retouch, and adjust images for web performance and visual impact
• Ensure proper resolution, compression, and accessibility considerations
Print and Production
• Prepare print-ready files for offset printing
• Manage bleed, trim, color profiles, and prepress checks
• Coordinate with print vendors
• Ensure production accuracy and brand consistency
Video and motion graphics
• Edit short-form social media videos
• Add captions, motion graphics, and basic animation
• Resize and optimize video content for different platforms
Other duties as assigned, meetings, training/professional development.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications:
• BA, BFA Degree, or related field
• 3+ years of work experience as a visual designer
• Proven graphic designing experience
• A strong portfolio with experience with logo design, typography, color, layout design and image selections
• Proficient use of Adobe Creative Suite - InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Premier and AfterEffects
• Proficient in MS Office (Excel and PowerPoint)
• Strong aesthetic skills with the ability to combine various colors, fonts, and layouts
• Ability to meet deadlines while working on team projects
• Solid understanding of print production and prepress workflows
• A keen eye for aesthetics and details
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in a higher education setting
• Video editing, motion graphics and animation skills
• Experience with Drupal
