Supervises: No supervisory duties are included in this position.
Position Summary:
The Lifeguard/Surf Rescue Technician is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of all club members and guests at both the private swimming pool and oceanfront beach areas. The primary duty is accident prevention through vigilant surveillance and the enforcement of all safety rules and regulations. In the event of an emergency, Lifeguard/Surf Rescue Technician must respond quickly and effectively, administering life-saving techniques and first aid as necessary.
Classification:
Education and/or Experience
- Some High School required, College preferred
- Ability to swim 400 yards in under 10 minutes.
- Dive to the bottom of the pool and lift a 10-pound weight.
- America Red Cross Lifesaving or USLA certification preferred.
- Water Aerobics Instructor skillset or EMT certification will have a higher consideration.
Job Knowledge, Core Competencies and Expectations
- Minimum knowledge of and training in pool chemistry.
- High competency in rescue and surveillance techniques, CPR/AED and blood-borne pathogens.
- Participates in pool safety programs and risk management.
- Employs only those methods and teaching techniques outlined and approved by the American Red Cross and USLA.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform required role in emergency situations.
Job Tasks/Duties
- Vacuums pool bottom; empties automatic pool robot; skims bugs and other debris from surface to prepare pool for daily use.
- Maintains Pool Deck furniture and side tables, insuring cushions are clean, free of dirt, sand, mold and bird feces.
- Setup beach umbrella and chairs on the beach on open beach days.
- Rake the beach of debris and seaweed at the beginning of the day and stow at the end of the day.
- Supervises and observes swimmers at all times to ensure their safety.
- Administers care to swimmers’ minor injuries such as small cuts and bruises.
- Assists in organizing clinics and private swimming lessons for members as directed by the Swimming Pool Manager or instructors.
- Enforces rules of conduct at the pool.
- Checks first aid supplies and reports needed items and restocking.
- Straightens the pool and cabana areas at the beginning, during, and the end of the day.
- Assists in used towel retrieval.
- Maintains all necessary records determined by the Aquatics Director.
- Attend all meetings as directed by the Aquatics Director.
- Implements all pool safety equipment.
- Performs required pool pre-opening duties.
- Inform Aquatics Director about unresolved member or guest disruptions that could cause a safety problem.
- Performs other appropriate tasks assigned by the Aquatics Director.
Rule Enforcement and Member Education:
- Enforce all club, pool, and beach rules and regulations consistently and professionally to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment.
- Educate members and guests on water safety practices and the proper use of aquatic equipment, and sea life dangers and regulatory considerations.
- Interact with members in a positive and professional manner, providing exceptional customer service.
Licenses and Special Requirements
- Must have current Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate.
- USLA (United States Lifesaving Association) Basic certification will be considered if not ARC certified.
- American Red Cross Basic First Aid required, training on AED units and possession of a current Red Cross CPR card.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Ability to bend, stretch, twist or reach, walk, stand, stoop, climb stairs, balance and/or crouch.
- Continuous repetitive motions.
- Physical exertion over long periods of time.
- Walking and running in soft and hard sand.
- Carrying and moving multiple chairs and umbrellas.
