Position Summary:
We are looking for a Graph Database Kernel Engineer to work on the core systems of our graph database. You will help design and evolve the storage engine, transaction system, page cache, schema, and query execution foundations. Youll be part of a highly skilled engineering team that values technical rigor, clean design, and honest engineering discussions.
If you enjoy solving deep, low-level computer science problems? motivated by building high-performance, reliable database internals that power real-world graph workloads? then this role shall excite you. Our team has a mix of highly proficient people from multiple fields such as Machine Learning, Data Science, Software Engineering, Operations, and Big Data Analytics. What You Will Do:
- Build and ship core kernel functionality of a graph database
- Design and maintain:
- Storage engines
- Transaction and concurrency control
- Page cache and memory management
- Schema and metadata handling
- Optimise graph traversal and query execution paths
- Work on multi-threaded, performance-critical systems
- Write high-quality, testable, and maintainable systems code
- Debug and optimise CPU, memory, and IO bottlenecks
- Participate in design reviews, roadmap discussions, and architectural decisions
- Evaluate research and industry techniques to improve kernel component. Use innovation time and prototype kernel improvements
- Strong experience building low-level or systems software
- Deep understanding of:
- Data structures and algorithms
- Concurrency and synchronization
- System design and performance trade-offs
- Proficiency in C++ and /or Scala
- Experience with graph databases or database internals
- Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills
- Experience working with large, long-lived codebases
- A collaborative mindset - you enjoy discussing, challenging, and refining ideas
- Experience with JanusGraph, TinkerPop, or similar graph systems, Python
- JVM internals and performance tuning
- Storage engine or transaction system experience
- Exposure to distributed systems fundamentals
- 4+ years of experience
- Languages: C++, Scala
- Graph Stack: JanusGraph, TinkerPop
- Focus Areas: Kernel systems, indexing, transactions, schema, query execution
- Engineering Values: Performance, correctness, simplicity, and long-term maintainability
