About This Position

Description:

The Psychologist Examiner conducts independent mental health evaluations (non-treatment examinations) of Veterans filing disability compensation and/or pension claims. The examiner reviews medical, military, and psychosocial records; interviews the Veteran; administers psychological assessments when appropriate; formulates diagnostic impressions; and issues clear, objective medical-opinions and reports relevant to service-connection, aggravation, and functional impairment. These evaluations support VA decisions about service-connected disabilities.

  • Review Veteran’s service records, medical and mental-health records, and any other relevant documentation to prepare for the examination.
  • Conduct a thorough interview with the Veteran to obtain: trauma or stressor history (as applicable), symptom history, treatment history, occupational and social functioning, current and past mental health issues, and other relevant psychosocial context.
  • Administer standardized psychological instruments or validity/malingering assessments as indicated (for example when evaluating claimants for conditions such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, or cognitive impairments) and interpret results in context.
  • Diagnose mental disorders according to the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as required, and determine whether the condition is “at least as likely as not” related to or aggravated by military service (nexus opinion).
  • Provide a well-reasoned medical opinion that addresses: (a) the existence of a diagnosed mental health condition, (b) its relationship (or lack thereof) to service, (c) severity of the condition including functional limitations, and (d) whether the condition is permanent, temporary, worsened or improved.
  • Complete and submit the relevant VA Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) or other form-based reports accurately and timely.
  • Document findings clearly, concisely, and objectively; craft reports that are legally and clinically defensible, suitable for use in the Veteran’s claims adjudication process.
  • Maintain strict professional boundaries: the examiner is not providing ongoing treatment, psychotherapy or medication management for the Veteran. The role is evaluation only.
  • Meet productivity and scheduling benchmarks (e.g., number of exams per day or week) while ensuring quality and thoroughness.
  • Stay current with published information relevant to C&P examinations
  • Ensure confidentiality and compliance with all applicable federal, state, and facility regulations regarding veteran privacy, record-keeping, and conflict of interest.
  • Participate in required training, quality assurance and peer-review activities as required.
Requirements:

Education: Doctorate (Required) PhD or Psy.D.

License/Certification:

  • An unencumbered Wisconsin License to practice (Required)
  • APA accredited PsyD or PhD in Clinical Psychology (Required)
