POSITIONOVERVIEW:
Under direction, performs a variety of routine maintenance and repair tasks in support of the Mercer County Correction Center. Work includes maintenance and repair activities across multiple skilled trades, including masonry, plastering, carpentry, painting, plumbing, steamfitting, sheet metal, electrical, glazing, mechanical, and related areas. This position supports the safe, secure, and continuous operation of a correctional facility and performs related duties as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs routine building maintenance and repair work acrosscorrectional facility structures, housing units, administrative areas, andsecured spaces.
- Performs masonry, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical,glazing, sheet metal, and mechanical maintenance and repair tasks.
- Erects simple forms, mixes cement and aggregates, poursconcrete, and performs finishing work for concrete structures.
- Patches, repairs, and maintains brick, concrete, plasteredwalls, and ceilings.
- Spackles and paints interior and exterior metal, wood, andmasonry surfaces in accordance with facility standards and securityrequirements.
- Repairs plumbing stoppages and leaks in copper, soil, andiron piping systems.
- Replaces washers, gaskets, and performs general plumbingservice repairs.
- Performs basic sheet metal work related to roofs,drainboards, gutters, and rainspouts.
- Replaces light bulbs, fuses, wall plates, switches, fixturecords, and similar electrical components.
- Replaces broken glass and performs re-puttying as required.
- Performs light maintenance on equipment and vehicles,including lubrication and refueling, as assigned.
- Cleans, maintains, secures, and properly stores tools andequipment in accordance with correctional facility procedures.
- Maintains simple records related to work assignments andcompleted tasks.
- Learns and utilizes electronic and/or manual recording andcomputerized information systems used by the County and Correction Center.
- Complies with all safety, security, and operationalprotocols of the Mercer County Correction Center.
- Performs related duties as assigned in supportof Central Maintenance operations.
Note: The listed responsibilities are illustrative. Aparticular position may not perform all duties listed, and additional relatedduties may be assigned as operational needs require.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Appointees will be required to possess a valid New Jerseydriver's license only if operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility,is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
- Appointees may be required to possess a valid CommercialDriver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type ofvehicle being operated.
Note: Responsibility for ensuring employees possess theappropriate motor vehicle license, consistent with the class and type ofvehicle operated, rests with the Appointing Authority.
KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, andpractices used in general building maintenance and repair work.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, andsecurity considerations associated with maintenance work in a correctionalenvironment.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral andwritten instructions.
- Ability to observe and apply required safety and securityprecautions while performing assigned work.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, andproperly use equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to maintain simple records and documentation.
- Ability to learn and utilize electronic and/or manualrecording and information systems used by the County and Correction Center.
