About This Position

SOL Fiber was founded by the Farnes family and a former employee of their previous telecommunications services business and was started out of a need for middle mile fiber on diverse routes for carriers who service hyperscale's and large enterprise who were tired off the big guys B.S., as a small a nimble provider who targets the "crumbs" we self-preform 95% of our annual workload so we employ engineers, warehousers, electricians, welders, mechanics, equipment operators, CDL drivers, and so much more. Position Summary

The Director of Engineering leads SOL Fiber’s Engineering Department and is responsible for the design, technical standards, modeling, documentation, and engineering oversight. This position manages the full engineering lifecycle—from conceptual design through final stamped construction drawings - ensuring all designs meet SOL Fiber’s quality expectations, structural requirements, electrical standards, industry codes, and long-term operational demands. The role requires deep experience in electrical power systems for telecommunications, OSP/ISP engineering, BIM workflows, CAD modeling, and the creation of detailed engineering deliverables supporting construction, permitting, network deployment, and future scalability.

1. Directs all engineering activities related to electrical systems, telecommunications infrastructure, OSP/ISP routing, network architecture, and facility-level engineering.

2. Oversees modeling and drafting activities, including CAD design, BIM development, 3D engineering, and construction drawing production.

3. Supervises engineers and manages performance of delivering engineering packages.

4. Establishes engineering design standards, specifications, templates, quality requirements, and technical documentation protocols.

5. Reviews and approves engineering drawings, calculations, electrical load analyses, HVAC sizing requirements, grounding/bonding plans, and fiber routing schematics.

6. Ensures engineering deliverables comply with NESC, NEC, IEEE, manufacturers’ standards, DOT requirements, and local jurisdictions.

7. Coordinates with the Chief Infrastructure Officer and network committee to ensure constructability, field feasibility, and alignment between design and execution.

8. Ensures all as-built information, fiber designs, electrical specifications, and structural details are accurately incorporated into GIS and BIM datasets.

9. Oversees the development of engineering support tools, engineering databases, detail libraries, and standardized BIM/CAD workflows.

10. Provides engineering-level support during outages, restoration events, and emergency operational scenarios.

11. Manages engineering budgets, contracted engineering services, external design engagements, and long-term planning for future expansion projects.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Director of Engineering is the highest-ranking technical design authority beneath the CTO and is responsible for maintaining the engineering integrity of SOL Fiber’s network. This position uniquely combines expertise in telecommunications engineering, electrical systems, CAD/BIM modeling, underground fiber system design, and regulated engineering processes requiring PE oversight. The role bridges conceptual engineering, detailed modeling, operational planning, and constructability evaluations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Overall Position Expectations

1. Advanced knowledge of telecommunications engineering, fiber-optic network architecture, and underground utility design.

2. Strong background in electrical engineering concepts, including load calculations, grounding, bonding, AC/DC system design, and telecom power systems.

3. Expert proficiency in CAD, BIM modeling, drafting workflows, and engineering design automation.

4. Familiarity with building information modeling for electrical rooms, POP facilities, conduit systems, and structural attachments.

5. Ability to supervise engineers, GIS staff, and external PE firms delivering stamped designs.

6. Ability to interpret and develop engineering drawings, schematics, site plans, structural details, and load calculations.

7. Strong knowledge of NESC, NEC, IEEE standards, DOT design requirements, and telecommunications industry best practices.

8. Ability to analyze engineering problems, perform root-cause assessments, and produce actionable technical solutions.

9. Excellent communication and documentation skills, including the ability to prepare engineering reports and technical specifications.

10. Strong project management abilities, including planning, forecasting, and coordinating multiple engineering deliverables concurrently.

Position Requirements

Education, Training, and Experience

1. Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related technical discipline.

2. Minimum of 5-8 years of engineering experience in telecommunications, electrical engineering, utility design, network engineering, or similar field.

3. Minimum of 3–5 years of supervisory or lead engineering experience, including oversight of multidisciplinary teams.

4. Experience in CAD/BIM modeling and/or utility modeling is required.

Licenses and Certifications

1. A valid professional engineering license in the State of Wyoming.

2. A valid driver’s license that allows the employee to legally operate a motor vehicle in the United States. License must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.

3. Must possess OSHA 30-hour General Industry certification within 30 days of hire, at the expense of the company.

4. Must possess American Heart Association Heartsaver (First Aid, CPR, & AED) certification within 30 days of hire and must be maintained for the duration of the assignment, at the expense of the company.

5. Must possess an ATSSA (American Traffic Safety Services Association) TCS (Traffic Control Supervisor) within 180 days of hire and must be maintained for the duration of the assignment, at the expense of the company.

6. Must possess an FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) Part 107 UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) license within 1 year of hire and must be maintained for the duration of the assignment, at the expense of the company, at the expense of the company.

7. Must complete all assigned training courses within the company’s LMS (Learning Management System) within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

1. The ability to hold professional licenses in additional states.

2. Experience engineering underground fiber networks at the long-haul, metro, or distribution level.

3. Experience integrating CAD/BIM workflows with GIS and enterprise engineering systems.

4. Autodesk, Bentley, or Esri certifications relevant to BIM/GIS/CAD workflows.

5. Experience managing multiple external engineering vendors simultaneously.

Documents Required at Time of Hire

1. Proof of Citizenship

2. A copy of motor vehicle record issued within 30 days of hire by the Department of Motor Vehicles or such agency.

3. Valid USDOT Physical Card, paid for by the company.

SOL Fiber and client facilities – Point Of Presence Sites (POPS), data centers, central offices, offices, schools, libraries, building rooftops, chase-ways, Right Of Ways (ROW), etc.

Work Environment

Strength: Medium/heavy exert force of 50-100 lbs., occasionally; 25-50 lbs., frequently; 10-20 lbs., constantly.

Physical Demand: Frequent sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, climbing, crouching, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Stamina to remain seated and maintain concentration for an extended period of time. Hearing and speech to communicate in person, via video conference and computers, or over the telephone. Vision: Frequent near/far acuity and color vision. Vision to read printed and online materials, Video Display Terminal (VDT) screens, or other monitoring devices.

Environmental Conditions: Varies from climate-controlled office settings to work outdoors with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods.

Hazards: Frequent electrical shock hazards, furniture, office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals and fumes (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand-operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).

CAD/BIM workstations, engineering software suites, plotting equipment, field verification tools, tablets, GPS data collectors, PPE, company vehicles, servers, and standard office equipment.
