About This Position
The Opportunity
The main objective of this position is to investigate, process, and manage all property and casualty claims from initial reporting through closure while also overseeing First & Third‑Party Financial Recovery, Vendor Risk Management, and Risk Mitigation activities across their assigned territory. When needed, they provide backup support by handling Workers’ Compensation claims until they can be transitioned, coordinating across multiple locations and ensuring compliance in the management of first and third‑party property damage and injury claims filed against the Port of Virginia.
What You’ll Do: Responsibilities
- Manage Property and Casualty claims as the primary adjudicator and Workers’ Compensation as a secondary function, maintaining accurate files, coordinating with partners, evaluating claim validity, managing correspondence, and overseeing surveyor engagement, settlements, legal documents, and reserve levels. Obtain investigative materials, consult relevant experts, and review insurance policies to ensure appropriate coverage and limits of liability.
- Serve as the main contact for claims across assigned terminals, conducting regular site visits to assess conditions and provide on-site support and training. Build and maintain strong relationships with terminal management to ensure efficient claim reporting and resolution.
- Support cross divisional efforts by analyzing claim trends, conducting terminal risk assessments, and providing guidance to reduce exposure. Collaborate with departments across the organization to manage claims, address denials, and strengthen risk mitigation through data driven insights and operational recommendations.
- Ensure timely and accurate claim reporting to insurance carriers while maintaining metrics, dashboards, and regular reports for Risk Management leadership. Support audits and uphold proper records in alignment with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Lead subrogation efforts by identifying and pursuing recovery opportunities related to third party negligence, collaborating with carriers, legal counsel, and internal stakeholders while maintaining detailed records of actions, communications, and outcomes. Monitor all statutes of limitation to ensure deadlines are met and recovery rights are fully preserved.
- Assist with managing third party vendor access agreements as needed, ensuring all vendors meet Terminal Access Agreement requirements before access is granted. Maintain compliance standards by verifying documentation and coordinating with relevant terminal stakeholders.
- Support vendor risk management by evaluating vendor and contractor exposure, assisting with onboarding and prequalification, and ensuring contractual and insurance obligations are met. Collect, track, and review Certificates of Insurance, notifying stakeholders of deficiencies and helping enforce compliance requirements.
- Assist with insurance renewals, endorsements, coverage reviews, and carrier communications while supporting the preparation and submission of insurance applications. Maintain accurate records of all policies, endorsements, and certificates, and provide support for any additional insurance or risk related inquiries or documentation need
- Collects and evaluates RMIS requirements and identifies updates and improvements.
- Provides support and serves as backup to the Manager, Risk & Claims as assigned
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Must be able to respond to and work in non‑office environments as needed, including exposure to varying weather conditions, and be available to support incident investigations during non‑standard hours as part of a 24/7 on‑call rotation.

Education
Bachelor’s degree in related field or four years of experience in lieu of education
Licenses, Certifications, and Credentials
Valid driver’s license and Transportation Worker Identification Credential are required; The Associate in Claims (AIC™) designation must be obtained within one year of receiving this position.
Work Experience
Five years of relevant experience required.
