About This Position
Cytology Aide

JOB SUMMARY
-
Processes Gynecologic and Non-gynecologic specimens, maintains instruments, and completes documentation for the distribution of slides to Cytotechnologists. Serves as a liaison to physician offices, by ensuring that they have adequate supplies for collection.

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
-
Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
-
Receives and accessions all gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens upon receipt in the department.
-
Performs collection of all pertinent information needed for testing, and enters that data into the appropriate computer programs.
-
Operates all necessary automated instrumentation and keeps appropriate records, (including but not limited to preparing reagents, performing maintenance and troubleshooting) to prepare microscope slides for staining and cover slipping.

Responsible for distribution of supplies for Cytology testing to physician offices.

Responsible for aliquoting of samples for ancillary/additional testing.

EDUCATION/LICENSE/ CERTIFICATIONS/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
-
Minimum requirement:
-
At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either—
-
24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
-
24 semester hours of science courses that include—
-
Six semester hours of chemistry; and
-
Six semester hours of biology; and
-
Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination
-

Preferred qualifications:
-
One year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in a professional medical laboratory environment

Regularly works near moving mechanical parts

Regularly exposed to blood and/or body fluids and infection
-
Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
-
Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
-
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Occasionally required to maintain a stationary position (standing or sitting)

Frequently required to walk and move about

Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment
-
Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices

Regularly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing
-
Frequently required to lift and/or move 25 pounds
-
Occasionally required to life and/or move 50 pounds
-
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
