This role will be located at one of Discovery Land Company’s locations: Moncayo Ocean Club, Puerto Rico, set outside of “Fajardo, Puerto Rico.”
Moncayo Ocean Club is seeking a Safety Director to join the Safety and Security Department.
Job Summary:
The Moncayo Safety Director plays a key role in creating and maintaining a safe working environment by enforcing safety protocols, identifying potential hazards, and ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations. This role is essential in preventing workplace incidents and protecting both people and property. In this role they are dedicated individuals who are responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs that protect employees and contractors from potential hazards while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and standards. Their expertise is essential in fostering a culture of safety at Moncayo Golf and Ocean Club.
The Moncayo Safety Director integrates safety into daily routines by monitoring activities and facilitating team awareness. This role demands practical oversight, quick responsiveness, and constant alignment with operational realities across shifts, departments, operations, development and job sites.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Policy & Strategy Development: Maintaining a comprehensive corporate safety program and strategic health and safety systems for Construction, Development and Operations. Works closely with Moncayo Team to implement safe work.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring the organization meets all federal, state, and local standards, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
- Incident Management: Leading investigations into significant workplace accidents and injuries to identify root causes and implement preventive measures.
- Training & Development: Overseeing safety training programs for all staff levels and mentoring a high-performance safety team on property. Works closely with all contractors on property to implement safe work practices.
- Risk Assessment & Auditing: Conducting high-level hazard assessments, site audits, and analyzing performance metrics to identify trends or risks. Works closely with assigned safety team on property to create a strong safety culture.
- Executive Advisory: Reporting safety metrics and performance data directly to Corporate Safety Director and Moncayo Senior Leadership.
- Claims Oversight: Managing workers’ compensation, liability claims, and return-to-work programs in collaboration with Moncayo HR.
- Budget Management: Planning and managing the department's budget for safety initiatives and equipment.
- Corporate: Work closely with Corporate Director of Safety to initiate safety programs and create property safety culture.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine inspections and hazard spot checks. (50% field and 50% office work)
- Lead, monitor and collect contractor weekly toolbox talks and briefings.
- Verify contractors are using proper PPE and ensure it’s in safe working condition.
- Collaborate with team contractor safety representatives to ensure safe work.
- Maintain logs of incidents, near misses, re-training and lessons learned.
- Implement corrective actions with contractor representatives.
- Reduce accident / injury frequency through early risk detection and training.
- Ensure regulatory and policy compliance across sites.
- Promote a safety-first culture through visibility and education.
- Respond swiftly to hazards and unsafe behaviors.
- Support operational continuity through safety planning and communication.
- Strengthen employee confidence in workplace safety systems.
- Identify and evaluate potential health and security risks and hazards on property.
- Work with contractors to implement measures to mitigate and control risks.
- Routinely assess Moncayo’s safety measures are in line with government Health and Safety regulations.
- Schedule regular safety reviews and assessments to ensure continuous compliance.
- Train Moncayo development team and operational staff in relevant safety regulations and how to identify hazards in the field.
- Ensure appropriate handling, storage and disposal of any dangerous and/or hazardous materials.
- Work closely with contractors and security to respond, report and document emergencies, accidents and incidents.
- Initiate and oversee Moncayo Safety Committee.
- Coordinate and implement new hire safety onboarding program for all Moncayo personnel. (Development, Club, Construction and Operations)
- Review contractor safety plans and identify any loopholes that do not align with Moncayo Site Specific Safety Program (SSSP).
- Prepare and present weekly / monthly safety reports.
- Coordinate and lead monthly “All Hands Safety Meetings”.
- Communicate and work with Corporate Discovery Safety Department.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Certified in risk management and health/safety management.
- 10-15 years of experience in a construction related background.
- Thorough knowledge of health and safety laws and regulations.
- Extensive attention to detail to distinguish safety related hazards.
- Ability to provide detailed reports and develop safety procedures.
- Good understanding of data analysis and risk assessment.
- Good organizational, leadership and motivational skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to recognize when safety conditions need improvement.
- Ability to prioritize tasks especially when handling an accident or incident.
- Able to climb, lift 50lbs, climb ladders and scaffolds.
- Completes duties assigned and contributes to the overall organization’s success.
- Flexibility and ability to pivot to new projects and desire to work in fast-paced environment.
- Positive attitude, professional demeanor, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to deliver service to members, guests, and team members.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to stay calm and focused during the busiest of times.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; additional languages preferred.
- Must be able to work flexible work hours/schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Long hours may be required due to business demands.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position including, but not limited to, working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, standing, walking, and moving for periods of greater than eight (8) hours, and lifting and carrying items sometimes greater than fifty (50) pounds.
