St. Agnes Catholic Parish
Reports To: Pastor
Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Position Summary
St. Agnes Catholic Church, an active parish of nearly 1,200 families in Roeland Park, Kansas, seeks a practicing Catholic Music Director to facilitate worship experiences that enrich the faith journey of parishioners.
The Music Director will lead music for three weekend Masses, Holy Days of Obligation, sacramental celebrations, and major liturgical seasons including Christmas (Advent through Epiphany) and Easter (Lent through Pentecost, including Holy Week). Weekend availability is required, with additional presence for special parish events. Hours are negotiable based on parish needs and candidate availability.
Primary Responsibilities
· Liturgical Music Planning
o Plan and lead music for all weekend Masses, Holy Days of Obligation, and sacramental celebrations.
o Select music appropriate to liturgical seasons, consistent with Catholic teaching, and in agreement with the Pastor.
o Coordinate music for major celebrations, including Christmas, Easter, Advent and Lenten reconciliation services, First Communion, Confirmation, Reconciliation, and Graduation Masses.
· Choir and Volunteer Ministry Leadership
o Recruit, train, and support volunteer musicians, cantors, and choir members.
o Direct adult and children’s choirs, providing a welcoming and prayerful rehearsal environment.
o Schedule rehearsals and coordinate volunteer participation for liturgies and special events.
· Worship Aids and Seasonal Preparation
o Design and produce worship aids, seasonal programs, and special materials for liturgical celebrations.
o Ensure materials are accurate, visually appropriate, and aligned with parish branding and liturgical norms.
o Prepare seasonal worship resources in advance to correspond with the liturgical calendar.
· School Mass Collaboration
o Partner with St. Agnes School faculty and administration for music in weekly Wednesday morning Masses and school events.
o Assist with the Honor Choir and support Winter and Spring concerts.
o Provide additional music leadership for school Masses as needed.
· Music Administration and Clergy Collaboration
o Collaborate with clergy and parish staff for planning liturgical music.
o Maintain a music library, worship resources, and music ministry calendar.
o Supervise accompanists and other music personnel.
o Coordinate with families for weddings and funerals.
· Accompaniment and Performance
o Serve as primary accompanist on organ and/or piano for liturgies and rehearsals.
o Arrange for substitute musicians as needed.
· Liturgical Environment and Related Technologies
o Support parish staff and volunteers in coordinating liturgical art and environment.
o Maintain Caroling Bells according to the liturgical calendar and adjust church bell timing for daylight saving changes.
· Professional Development
o Participate in parish staff meetings and ongoing liturgical formation.
o Support parish-wide events as required.
· Qualifications
o Practicing Catholic in good standing.
o Proficient in piano and/or organ; basic vocal ability to lead congregational singing.
o Bachelor’s degree in Music or equivalent program of study.
o Demonstrated competency in planning and producing liturgical programs for major celebrations.
o Experience with reconciliation services and other prayer services preferred.
o Prior Music Director and supervisory experience preferred.
o Strong organizational, collaborative, and interpersonal skills.
o Familiarity with music notation and publishing software is helpful.
o Flexible availability for evenings, weekends, and designated holidays including Christmas and Easter
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 20 lbs (e.g., boxes of paper or office supplies).
- Manual dexterity for frequent keyboarding and phone use.
