The Chesapeake Bridges Division supports 1.75 million crossings per day by operating and maintaining 115 movable and fixed bridges and culverts. This position:
This position:
- Assists in performing the difficult skilled electrical tasks needed for the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, or replacement of all electrical systems required to operate the moveable bridges on a 24 hour per day basis (bridge, pump station, streetlights, building electrical systems, video cameras and recorders).
- Performs the necessary electrical maintenance for other departments/divisions within the City as requested or required.
- Supervises other employees.
- Responds to after-hours breakdowns at movable bridges and other bridge or weather incidents (on-call rotation or Alpha employee).
Requires:
- State of Virginia Journeyman Electrician Certification.
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment, and safety precautions used in installing and repairing electrical wiring systems, controls, electrical machinery, cameras, and equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the provisions of the appropriate national electrical codes and of pertinent City or State inspection and safety requirements.
- Ability to work in tight and confined spaces and at heights up to 200’, on and above water.
- Ability to prioritize, track, and oversee projects with respect to schedule and budget.

Required Qualifications:
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in the electrical trade or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of four years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Class B CDL is required within six months of employment (in-house training available). State of Virginia Journeyman Electrician Certification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
