About This Position
American Wood Fibers (AWF) is a manufacturer of both consumer and industrial products that are sold to multiple manufacturers as well as pet, agricultural, and home-heating markets. AWF is comprised of 350+ employees and holds operations at 11 locations, generating over $100M in annual sales revenue. We are currently seeking a candidate for the Maintenance Supervisor role in our Jamestown, CA facility.
OVERALL OBJECTIVE: Manage a safe, efficient, and productive maintenance department to keep both plant and equipment operating smoothly and efficiently.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary duties to include, but not limited to the following:
MAINTENANCE
- Hands-on Work
- Preventative Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Repair of:
- Hydraulic systems; Chain and belt driven augers and conveyors
- Electrical components and wiring of various complexity
- Blowers, fans, baghouses and airlocks
- Yard truck and trailers – walking floor, van, and container
- Mobile equipment; fork trucks, skid steers, loaders and lifts
- Drive CMMS and PM programs to maintain completion rates.
- Work Order Management
- Inputting auto-generated preventive maintenance, as necessary
- Prioritizing and distributing work orders (WO) for completion between self and technicians
- Verification of work performed, parts used, and time to complete
- Attaching supporting information used during repair to WO system
- Approval and closure of WO
- Work with system admin to update or add assets as changes to the processes occur, i.e. new equipment added, replaced, or modified
- Label assets for ease of reference
- Work with Engineering to plan and carry out major repairs and CAPEX projects as needed in the best interest of the plant.
Contractor Oversight
- Ensure all contractors review and sign contractor safety requirements
- Enforce all rules as necessary
- Research and negotiate best pricing for parts and repair work
- Coordinate with operation team and contractors on best timing for projects to be completed
- Stock and maintain organized storage of critical spare parts
- Immediately alerts Jamestown Management of any safety risk and possible future cause of downtime
SAFETY AND ADMINISTRATION
- Responsible for safety, cleanliness, and organization of maintenance department.
- Promotes safety and safe working habits on a daily basis.
- Coordinates and administers company policies as they relate to the maintenance department.
- Conducts tests and reports items regarding insurance qualifications to meet safety regulations and standards.
- Attends and participates in monthly safety meetings.
- Establishes personal goals and works with fellow employees towards continuous improvement and teamwork.
- Know and understand budgets related to your department
- Code invoices to proper accounts
- Works with Plant Manager and staff coordinating labor for special project activities
- Interview, hire and coordinates staffing and labor requirements
- Supports proper cross training of personnel within the department
- Always maintains a positive and motivating attitude
- Fire Prevention
- Know and understand safety systems and maintain their integrity
- Spark Detection
- Sprinklers
- Inspections - mostly contracted out but coordinated by this position
- Annual scale calibration and certifications
- Annual fire pump test
- Annual sprinkler line test
- Vacuum electrical buckets
- Annual thermography and repair of identified issues
- Fire extinguisher monthly and annual checks
- Annual fixed ladder inspection
- Annual hoist inspections
- Annual harness inspections
- Lock-out Tag-out system audit
- Monthly ladder and emergency lighting checks
- Baghouse sock changes as necessary
- Furnace/AC/heater inspections and cleanings
- Mobile equipment (skid-loader, scissor lift, etc.) as necessary
- Monthly and annual Clarkes test and inspection
Dust Management
- Maintenance of dust control systems where applicable
- Quick repair of leaks contributing to combustible dust build-up
- Clean-up of any dust piles accumulated during repairs.
KPI’S AND DELIVERABLES:
- Equipment Uptime (initial target of 80%)
- Lumin compliance
- PM’s completed on time (minimum 90% completion rate)
- Technician Hours accounted for (75% or more).
- Document repairs & costs in Llumin
- Assign daily, Weekly & Monthly WOs to Techs for completion
- Review completed work orders for closure
- Creating PM’s in Lumin
- Start with key equipment; shavers, balers, top tier, fork lifts, loaders, compressors, etc… Have all key equipment set up within 6 months
- Reduce time to repair. Improve Mean time to repair by 20% in 1 year.
- Documented Spare parts inventory. Spare parts are organized and locations are labeled.
- Reduce dependence on contractors.
- Identify skills we have with the current team and eliminate contractors for skills we have in house.
- Train or hire in house talent to develop any gaps in skill set that we need to avoid hiring external contractors.

QUALITY:
- Maintains and verifies that all current quality assurance systems are fully operational and calibrated to ensure customer specs can be met or exceeded
- Assists in the design and implementation of new procedures as needed
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Expected to lift, push, pull, and carry weights in excess of 60 lbs.
- Position requires the ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, kneel and squat for extended periods
- Expected to work indoors and outdoors in all-weather situations if necessary
- Must have the ability to climb ladders, stairs as well as being comfortable working at various heights including the tallest structures in the facility, approximately 100’ high on a frequent basis
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or G.E.D.
- 5+ years of industrial maintenance experience (manufacturing)
- 3+ years supervisory experience and/or 5 years Lead Tech experience
- Exceptional organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Clear and concise communication abilities
- Microsoft Office aptitude.
- Basic understanding of LEAN and continuous improvement principles.
- Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems
- PLC/HMI programming and troubleshooting is preferred
- Proficient in the reading of blueprints and electrical schematics
- Proficient in CMMS systems (Experience with Lumens Systems a plus)
