Packaging Project Engineer (Level II)

Job Title: Packaging Project Engineer (Level II)
Location: Richmond, VA
Employment Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire
Compensation: Up to $105,000 annually (based on experience)

Position Overview

We’re seeking a Packaging Project Engineer to support and lead a range of engineering initiatives within a regulated manufacturing setting. This role is responsible for overseeing packaging-related projects from concept through execution, including equipment design, implementation, and performance optimization.

The ideal candidate is comfortable managing projects independently while also contributing to larger, cross-functional efforts that support production efficiency, compliance, and overall operational success.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Execution

  • Provide technical support for packaging equipment initiatives across new and existing product lines
  • Develop packaging line layouts and support integration of systems and equipment
  • Oversee installation, startup, and validation activities for new equipment
  • Create and execute testing protocols to ensure proper equipment performance
  • Participate in vendor evaluations, including FAT and SAT processes

Project Coordination

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timelines, scope, and budgets are met
  • Develop cost estimates and monitor project spending
  • Contribute to capital planning and long-term project strategies
  • Provide regular updates and reports to internal stakeholders
  • Review and approve contractor proposals, RFIs, and change documentation

Collaboration

  • Partner with internal teams including Operations, Quality, Regulatory, and Procurement to resolve issues and drive project success
  • Coordinate with vendors and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and efficiency
  • Maintain adherence to internal standards and regulatory expectations

Compliance & Process Improvement

  • Ensure all engineering activities meet cGMP and regulatory requirements
  • Support change control and validation processes related to equipment and systems
  • Identify and implement improvements to enhance efficiency and standardization
  • Promote a culture of compliance and continuous improvement

Documentation & Training

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation such as SOPs, reports, and job aids
  • Keep accurate records of project activities and outcomes
  • Train operations staff on new equipment and updated processes
  • Act as a technical resource for team members
Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • At least 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment (pharma, personal care, or similar preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with equipment design, installation, and validation in a regulated setting

Core Skills

  • Strong organizational and project management capabilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision
  • Solid analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Effective communication and technical documentation abilities
  • Familiarity with cGMP and regulatory standards
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, process flows, and engineering drawings
  • Experience with CAD or similar tools is a plus
  • Proven ability to lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams
