Job Description
Job Purpose:
This position is primarily responsible for ensuring the health of all students as a means to ensure academic success. The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disabilities and the early detection and correction of health problems. Promotes and protects the health status of students and staff through functions in all areas of Coordinated School Health.
Duties:
Health Services
- Provide health assessments
-Obtain a health history
-Screen and evaluate finding of deficit in vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, etc. as directed
-Observe students as required for development and health patterns/concerns
-Participate in school registration process to procure parental consent and health insurance information
-Identifies abnormal health findings
- Develop and implement health plans and procedures
-Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students
-Interpret the health status of students to parents and school personnel.
-Plans and implements school health management protocols
-Initiate and follow referrals for intervention and/or remediation
-Provides ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel or health agencies
- Provide direct nursing intervention
-Administer appropriate level of first aid for illness and injury, including CPR
-Administer/supervise medication per doctor's orders and monitor the effects
-Provide individual health counseling concerning high-risk behaviors
-Utilize existing resources to provide appropriate care of students
- Performs a variety of clerical duties, which may include: inputting information into database; running report queries; making copies; creating labels; filing medical records; preparing routine correspondence; and/or, performing other related activities.
- Provides emergency personnel with critical data and information within established guidelines and procedures.
Health Education
- Provide health education for students, staff and parents
-Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health professional between home, school and community.
-Act as a resource person in promoting health careers.
-Serve as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction
- Serve as a resource person in health education
-Participate in health curriculum planning and evaluation
-Promote drop-out prevention programs
-Provides consultation in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school district
-Where applicable, participates in the IEP Plan development
Healthy School Environment
- Recommend provisions for a safe, healthy school environment
- Serve on school/district health council
- Promote and assist in control of communicable diseases
- Ensure that each student complies with the immunization requirements of the State of Arizona and Maricopa County
- Confirm that students have medical emergency cards on file
- Participate in wellness projects

Skills/Qualifications:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Valid Arizona Nursing License or EMT Certification; and a minimum of one year of work experience in the health care area
OTHER SKILLS/CERTIFICATIONS:
- CPR Certification (or obtain in the first 6 months)
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY:
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of basic computer operations and software systems required for the school, and office equipment (copiers, faxes, binders, folders, etc.)
