Staff Android Engineer (Contractor)

What You'll Do:
Gabb is seeking a hands-on Staff Android Engineer to lead the technical direction of our Android apps and SDKs. This role blends deep coding expertise (about 70%) with architectural leadership and influence (about 30%). You will set patterns for performance, privacy, and reliability that our mobile portfolio follows, including phones and wearables. You will partner closely with product, design, backend platform, firmware, and QA to deliver safe, high-quality experiences for families at scale.Additional Responsibilities

• Hands-On Development (70%) Architecture and System Design (30%)
• Build production features in Kotlin using Jetpack Compose, Coroutines and Flow, Architecture Components, and WorkManager.
• Drive crash-free sessions above target, reduce ANR rate, improve cold start time, and optimize battery and memory.
• Security and Privacy by DesignImplement encryption with Android Keystore, secure data at rest and in transit, and follow data minimization.

What You'll Need

• 7+ years of professional Android development, with at least 2 years at senior or staff scope shipping complex consumer apps at scale.
• Strong Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, Coroutines and Flow, Architecture Components, WorkManager, and modern background execution limits.
• Proven experience with modular architectures, dynamic feature delivery, and multi-app or SDK platforms.
• Deep knowledge of networking, profiling, ANR debugging, and memory analysis.
• Preference for experience working directly with Android AOSP or custom Android builds.

• Track record of guiding architectural decisions and raising the bar on code quality and testing at team or org scale.
• Strong written and verbal communication that explains trade-offs and aligns partners quickly.
• Comfortable setting measurable targets such as crash-free sessions, ANR rate, app start time, and battery impact, then delivering against them
• Pragmatic systems thinker who favors simple, observable designs.
• Bias to action, strong ownership, and a growth mindset in a fast-moving environment.

This is a contractor role for Gabb. As such we are open to remote candidates.Fully remote, collaborate on US Mountain Time core hours for pairing, reviews, and releases.Long-term contract with potential to expand scope as the platform grows.
