As a Centralized Women’s Health Navigator at UNC Health Appalachian, you will play a critical role in ensuring seamless access, coordination, and high-quality care for OB, prenatal, and GYN patients across our Women’s Health, OBGYN, and Family Medicine practices.
This role blends clinical navigation with system-level access management. You will support expectant mothers and gynecologic patients while strategically managing scheduling, patient placement, and provider capacity across multiple sites. Your work will directly protect specialty access, improve care continuity, and enhance the patient experience across our region.

Compensation: Based on education, experience, certification, and internal equity
Schedule: Monday thru Friday 8am - 5pm

What You’ll Do as a Centralized Women’s Health Navigator-
Coordinate OB, prenatal, and GYN appointments, testing, and procedures to ensure seamless, patient-centered care.

Conduct early prenatal navigation and apply defined clinical routing criteria to ensure appropriate placement (Family Medicine, Women’s Health, or OBGYN), including direct placement of high-risk pregnancies.

Balance routine GYN and specialty access to preserve OBGYN capacity for high-risk and surgical patients.

Manage urgent add-ons, monitor referral completion, and ensure coordinated handoffs across practices.

Oversee centralized scheduling and cross-site navigation to optimize provider capacity and reduce backlog trends.

Monitor access metrics (third next available, prenatal access time, new patient wait times, referral completion, capacity utilization) and identify opportunities for operational improvement.

Collaborate with clinic leadership to adjust templates, protect specialty slots, support panel redistribution, and advance strategic growth initiatives.

Serve as liaison between patients, providers, clinic managers, and care teams to ensure clear communication and continuity of care.

Escalate placement or scope concerns when access conflicts arise.

High School Diploma or equivalent required

Prior experience in a Women’s Health Clinic or OB/GYN practice preferred

Experience in care coordination or patient navigation strongly preferred

Medical Assistant certification (CMA or RMA), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or Registered Nurse (RN) required

Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association required at time of hire

Strong knowledge of prenatal care and obstetric procedures

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, nurse midwives, and care teams

Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail

Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems

Compassionate, empathetic approach to patient care

Understanding of medical confidentiality and privacy regulations (HIPAA)

Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout clinic and patient care areas

Manual dexterity to perform medical assistant duties, including taking vital signs and assisting with procedures

Ability to lift and carry medical equipment and supplies as needed

Primarily clinic-based within the Women’s Health setting

Frequent interaction with patients, providers, and interdisciplinary team members

Exposure to examination rooms and administrative areas

Occasional flexibility in work hours based on patient and clinic needs
