Senior Technical Director

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Technical Director in Canada.

This role sits at the intersection of engineering leadership, technical strategy, and studio-wide delivery oversight within a fast-moving game development environment. You will shape the technical direction across multiple concurrent projects, ensuring engineering teams are set up for success from early concept through production and live delivery. Acting as a key partner to production, project leadership, and business development, you will help define feasibility, staffing, architecture, and risk across a diverse portfolio of game initiatives. The role requires strong judgment in evaluating complex codebases, anticipating delivery challenges, and guiding teams through technical uncertainty. You will also influence hiring, team structure, and engineering standards across the studio, ensuring consistency and long-term scalability. This is a high-impact leadership position where your decisions directly affect project outcomes, partner confidence, and studio-wide technical maturity.

Accountabilities

The Senior Technical Director is responsible for providing studio-level engineering leadership across multiple game development projects, ensuring technical excellence, delivery predictability, and scalable team structures. This includes guiding technical leads, shaping early project setup, and supporting business-critical technical decisions across production and partner engagements.

  • Lead and support technical directors and engineering leads across multiple active game projects
  • Provide studio-wide technical direction, ensuring alignment on architecture, engineering standards, and delivery practices
  • Own technical hiring strategy for senior engineering roles, including evaluation, selection, and team composition planning
  • Conduct technical due diligence for partner opportunities such as remasters, ports, co-development, and live operations
  • Define and support early-stage project setup, including pipelines, tooling, middleware selection, and engineering workflows
  • Identify and manage technical risks across projects, including performance, integration, scalability, and architectural challenges
  • Collaborate closely with production leadership to align technical constraints with scheduling, staffing, and delivery planning
  • Support teams in resolving complex engineering challenges while maintaining clarity, momentum, and ownership
  • Drive cross-functional engineering standards and improve collaboration between engineering, design, art, QA, and production teams
Requirements

This role requires an experienced engineering leader with deep game development expertise and a proven ability to guide multiple teams and projects simultaneously. The ideal candidate combines strong technical judgment with people leadership, strategic thinking, and excellent communication skills.

  • Significant experience in senior engineering leadership roles within the game development industry
  • Proven ability to manage and mentor technical leads across multiple concurrent projects
  • Strong experience evaluating complex codebases and assessing technical feasibility, risk, and staffing needs
  • Hands-on familiarity with both proprietary and commercial engines (e.g., Unreal, Unity, or custom engines)
  • Experience across remasters, ports, live operations, co-development, or external partner projects
  • Strong understanding of engineering pipelines, build systems, tooling, and early project setup practices
  • Ability to translate technical constraints into clear production planning, including scheduling and resource tradeoffs
  • Demonstrated experience hiring, developing, and scaling high-performing engineering teams
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical teams and external partners effectively
  • Strong systems thinking with the ability to balance long-term technical quality and short-term delivery needs
Benefits
  • Competitive salary range: $180,000 – $240,000 CAD
  • Remote-first work environment with flexible arrangements
  • Opportunity to lead technical strategy across a diverse portfolio of AAA and AA game projects
  • High-impact leadership role influencing studio-wide engineering standards and practices
  • Collaboration with experienced creative, production, and engineering teams
  • Involvement in high-profile IPs and original game development projects
  • Long-term career growth within a creative and innovation-driven studio environment
