About This Position
Umami Riot was born from a simple idea: pair joyful hospitality with uncompromising craftsmanship. Founded by Chef Tim Cushman and sake expert Nancy Cushman, our restaurants celebrate bold flavor, precision, and a deep respect for Japanese foodways – translated through a distinctly Boston lens. At Umami Riot, we’re not here to follow the rules of hospitality, we’re here to rewrite them – with heart, craft and fearless creativity.
Hojoko is where it all comes to life. A Japanese-inspired tavern fueled by loud music, high energy, and seriously good food. It’s where high-end technique meets low-key fun—wagyu cheeseburgers, spicy ramen, sake bombs—executed with the same precision and care as a fine dining kitchen. We take flavor seriously…everything else, not so much.
We’re looking for a Security Professional who sets the tone at the door — calm, confident, welcoming, and always in control.
THE GIG (AKA WHAT YOU’LL ACTUALLY BE DOING)
- Frontline presence at the door — setting the tone for the guest experience while maintaining a safe and controlled environment
- Checking IDs thoroughly and confidently to ensure compliance with all legal age requirements
- Managing the flow of guests entering and exiting the restaurant with professionalism and efficiency
- Monitoring for any suspicious activity and addressing concerns quickly, calmly, and appropriately
- Communicating clearly with management and staff to keep operations smooth and secure
- Maintaining awareness of capacity limits and assisting with crowd control during high-volume hours
- Providing a strong, visible security presence while still delivering a welcoming and respectful first impression
- Handling difficult situations with composure — de-escalating when needed and knowing when to escalate
- Supporting overall safety protocols and ensuring policies are followed without exception
THIS ROLE IS A GREAT FIT IF…
- You stay calm, confident, and in control under pressure
- You’re observant and notice details others might miss
- You can be firm but respectful — enforcing rules without creating friction
- You have strong instincts and good judgment in fast-paced environments
- You’re reliable, punctual, and take ownership of your role
- You enjoy being part of a high-energy nightlife or restaurant atmosphere
- You’re comfortable being the first and last point of contact for guests
THIS ROLE IS A GREAT FIT IF…
- Previous security, hospitality, or customer-facing experience preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to stand for extended periods and stay alert throughout the shift
- Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to handle high-volume environments with professionalism
- Basic understanding of ID verification and age compliance laws
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
LET’S SET EXPECTATIONS (IN A GOOD WAY)
This is a high-energy restaurant where the pace is constant, the crowd is lively, and the entrance is always.
This is a hands-on role. You’ll be on your feet for long shifts, maintaining awareness of your surroundings, managing guest interactions, and ensuring a safe environment at all times. The ability to stay focused, composed, and professional — even during peak hours — is key to success in this position.
A strong commitment to safety, consistency, and professionalism is essential, and we are dedicated to providing reasonable accommodations to support individuals in performing the essential functions of the role.
WHY PEOPLE STICK AROUND
- Competitive hourly pay - because your work matters
- Dining discounts across all Umami Riot locations
- Growth that’s real (not just talked about)
- A team culture rooted in respect, creativity, and heart
Pay Range: $25 per hour based on experience
