About This Position

Description:

The Maintenance Mechanic, under general directive supervision, works with and as a job lead could direct up to three (3) employees in performing skilled mechanical repair work on all plant equipment (air compressors, turbines, generators, pumps, fans, air heaters, blowers, etc.); all mechanical equipment (boilers, pulverizers, feeders, heat exchangers, condensers, valves, etc.); and all plant auxiliary equipment (yard equipment, power piping, etc.). Mechanical work includes assembly, non-code welding, sheet metal work, pipe fitting, machining, and rigging.

Requirements:
  • Must have at least a two-year technical degree applicable to the work or an equivalent in education, training, and experience.
  • Must be able to pass all the Performance Task Evaluations for the Maintenance Mechanic; be able to pass the required qualification tests within the specified time limit of 18 months; and complete all required training and maintain competency in skills taught.
  • Must be able to use measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, vernier calipers, screw pitch gauges, thickness gauges, and level to a 0.001 tolerance requirement.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the use of firefighting equipment, first aid, and resuscitation practices.
  • Must have a thorough working knowledge of safe rigging and scaffolding methods for work within the scope of this job.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of the maintenance work management systems or the equivalent.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience in turbines, valves, pumps, air compressors, pulverizing overhauls, coal yard equipment repairs, and other rotating equipment repairs.
  • Must have a thorough working knowledge of plant maintenance, repair, safety procedures, and the records that must be completed and retained as it applies to their job duties.
  • Must perform work from specifications, complex drawings, and blueprints. Perform work in strict accordance with these documents.
  • Must have a working knowledge of plant layout and the various equipment functions in the generating plants.
  • Must possess and maintain valid driver’s license(s) required to do work.
  • Has a working knowledge of the safe applications and use of the vehicles, cranes, slings, bars, rollers, and other equipment used in the work.
  • Must be able to work in high places and in restricted or confined spaces.
  • Must have the ability to receive and pass on orders and instructions to those employees assisting in such a manner as to maintain harmony, safety, and cooperation.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs rigging, dismantling, overhauling, repairing, testing, and assembling of rotating, mechanical, and plant auxiliary equipment; operates overhead and mobile cranes on regular and precision lifts.
  • Chooses appropriate slings, chains, ropes, and other rigging gear based on the weight, shape, and size of the load. Conducts thorough inspections of all rigging equipment to ensure they are in good condition and free from defects. Develops a detailed rigging plan that includes load calculations, lifting points, and the path of movement.
  • Makes or reproduces special parts, assemblies, tools, jigs, and fixtures; makes necessary measurements and sketches.
  • Performs layout and fitting of sheet metal and steel plates.
  • Operates and maintains hand tools and shop tools; performs drilling, grinding, cutting, shearing, filing, bending, forming, and chipping.
  • Aligns rotating equipment assemblies using dial indicator techniques.
  • Performs laser alignment on the plant's rotating equipment.
  • Performs non-code welding, brazing, soldering, electric arc welding, and oxyacetylene burning layouts. Fabricates and maintains plant piping. Prepares materials for and deposits metal surfaces on parts. Certified in structural (plate) welding.
  • Inspects, tests, adjusts, replaces, installs, maintains, and troubleshoots all plant mechanical equipment.
  • Overhauls plant mechanical equipment such as feedwater pumps, circulating pumps, drive gears, and air compressors in place or in the shop. Overhauls and repairs pulverizers, condensers, feedwater heaters, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Scrapes and hand fit bearings that require close tolerance.
  • Repairs and replaces manual, motor, and hydraulically operated valves of all sizes and pressures such as check, pressure regulating, automatic control, stop, and blowdown valves. Replaces, grinds, and reseats parts.
  • Repacks valves and pump shafts.
  • Performs insulation and refractory repair/installation.
  • Performs confined space monitoring and completes all required documentation such as recording date, time, and readings.
  • Builds and removes approved scaffolds.
  • Troubleshoots and inspects mechanical equipment. Suggests, directs, and performs the necessary work, including obtaining parts from the storeroom and staging the parts on the job.
  • Conducts tests required by mechanical maintenance work, such as testing valves and heat exchangers for leakage, and test runs of equipment upon completion of work.
  • Plans, lays out, instructs, and inspects periodically, maintenance work for employees being directed by them. Provides general direction and oversight on assigned jobs. Trains other employees in the training phase of on-the-job training.
  • Performs carpentry work, painting and cleaning, plumbing and heating, and building structure work, etc.
  • Records maintenance data as required by job duties.
  • Conduct work so employees under his/her direction are always safeguarded.
  • Assists in the development and review of maintenance procedures and methodologies as required.
  • Knowledgeable of the FE Clearance Procedure.
  • Performs pre-task safety analysis and post-task feedback reporting.
  • Performs other similar and less skilled work as assigned.
  • Maintains work areas, tools, and equipment in a neat, clean, and presentable condition.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a vocational or technical training program in automotive, diesel, or equipment repair preferred.
  • 2–5 years of experience in mechanical repair, depending on industry.
  • Certification from ASE or other relevant bodies is a plus.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand, bend, kneel, and work in awkward positions for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly, with accommodations as necessary.
  • Must have sufficient hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to use tools and perform repairs.
  • May be exposed to loud noises, fumes, grease, dirt, and varying temperatures.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Full-Time Hourly (Non-Exempt) position starting at $38.34/hr. Pay will be commensurate with experience.
