The Senior Director of Finance, Support Services provides strategic financial leadership for Carilion’s support services functions, including areas such as Information Technology, Supply Chain, and other designated administrative and operational support areas. This role supports these functions through strong financial planning, performance management, business insight, and organizational partnership.


This position is responsible for leading financial planning and analysis, budgeting, forecasting, performance reporting, and operational finance support across support services, while also supporting broader finance and organizational priorities through standardized planning, performance reporting, financial analysis, leadership support, and cross-functional collaboration.

The Senior Director serves as a key financial partner to support services leadership, working closely with operational leaders, corporate finance, financial systems, and executive leadership. The role also collaborates across the finance organization to promote consistency in financial practices, strengthen planning discipline, improve transparency and accountability, and ensure alignment with broader organizational financial goals. This position helps translate operational priorities into actionable financial insight that supports sound decision-making, effective resource allocation, and long-term financial sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serves as the senior finance leader for assigned support services areas, providing strategic guidance and financial insight to support operational performance, resource stewardship, and organizational priorities.

  • Leads the development, coordination, and oversight of operating and capital budgets for assigned support services functions in partnership with operational leadership and corporate finance.

  • Directs forecasting, variance analysis, and financial performance reporting for assigned areas, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.

  • Establishes, monitors, and communicates key financial and operational performance indicators to support informed decision-making, accountability, and performance improvement.

  • Coordinates and/or performs short- and long-range financial analyses using appropriate financial and statistical techniques to support business planning, prioritization, and resource allocation.

  • Supports and helps standardize business planning processes, tools, assumptions, and reporting to improve consistency, comparability, and decision support across functions.

  • Leads or supports finance accountability reporting for assigned areas and contributes to executive and board reporting as needed.

  • Partners with operational leaders to assess financial implications of operating issues, initiatives, staffing changes, capital requests, vendor relationships, and other business decisions, and develops recommendations or corrective actions as appropriate.

  • Provides leadership and support for labor and productivity reporting and analysis, including workforce dashboarding and related performance monitoring.

  • Uses benchmarking and comparative analysis to identify opportunities to improve financial performance, operational efficiency, and organizational effectiveness.

  • Leverages advanced analytics, automation, and emerging artificial intelligence tools to improve reporting, generate actionable insight, and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of finance support.

  • Provides consultative financial support and education to operational leaders to strengthen financial literacy, planning discipline, and performance ownership.

  • Supports business cases, pro formas, and scenario modeling related to operational initiatives, service improvements, capital planning, workforce strategies, and other organizational priorities.

  • Serves as a liaison with operations, financial systems, and other administrative partners to support organizational financial initiatives and coordinated execution.

  • Cultivates strong partnerships across accounting, supply chain, HR, enterprise finance, financial systems, and other operational and administrative functions to promote alignment and effective decision support.

  • Promotes consistency, transparency, and alignment between support services financial management practices and broader Carilion enterprise finance standards.

This role is expected to operate with a high degree of independence, influence, and accountability. The Senior Director of Finance, Support Services must be able to translate complex operational and organizational priorities into actionable financial insight, strengthen planning and reporting disciplines, and help advance Carilion’s mission through effective financial leadership and partnership.

What We Require:

Education: Bachelors Degree in accounting, finance or business administration. Masters degree in business administration or related field desirable.

Experience: Seven years experience in healthcare finance, accounting or financial planning

Licensure/Certifications/Registration: CPA desirable
