The role is based at DroneShield’s central Sydney headquarters. Overseas on-the-ground presence includes Virginia (USA), Netherlands, Denmark, Mexico and Dubai, as well as distributors in over 70 countries worldwide.
About the role
DroneShield is seeking a RF Test Engineer with relevant experience to join the team in Sydney, Australia. The position will report to the RFAI-ATK Team lead.
The primary focus of the role is to develop and maintain DroneShield’s RFAI-ATK Disruptor Capability. Working closely with ML/AI, Data Science, RF and infrastructure teams to innovate and enhance DroneShield’s world leading Anti-Drone technology. It represents an exceptional opportunity for a result-driven individual in a new niche but exploding market.
Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations
This role sits at the junction between R&D and Productisation with the main objective being to (1) Identify and characterise new drone defeat techniques and (2) verify these techniques function as expected on product.
The main tasks will involve:
- Analyse drone communication and control protocols to develop effective jamming strategies that can disrupt various types of drones
- Translate R&D requirements into effective test campaigns
- Conducting Test Campaigns – This role specifically focuses on empowering other Test Engineer with less RF knowledge
- Perform field testing of jammer systems to validate their effectiveness in real-world scenarios and environments
- Automating Testing
- Data Management
- Efficient communication of test results
- Documentation of testing process
- Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver on user and business requirements
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, or a related field
- 3+ years experience in RF, communication protocol, digital signal processing, and jamming techniques, preferably in the context of anti-drone or electronic warfare systems
- Knowledge of the following would also be essential:
- Familiarity with communication protocols such as Wi-Fi, 4G/5G, GNS
- Ability to understand and learn about proprietary drone communication protocols
- Strong understanding of RF systems, including modulation, demodulation, and signal propagation
- DSP and signal processing knowledge
- RF link budget analysis
- Experience with RF test equipment, including spectrum analysers, signal generators, VNAs, and oscilloscopes.
- RF setups validation and maintenance
- Knowledge of the following would also be desirable:
- Knowledge of electronic warfare (EW) systems and counter-UAS technologies
- Working knowledge of Antennas
- Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar languages for signal processing and analysis
