PURPOSE/SUMMARY:

The VDC Structural Steel Detailer III position is suited for technologically minded and detail-oriented individuals who have an interest in construction design and engineering principles. As a VDC Structural Steel Detailer III, you will be responsible for producing detailed fabrication models and shop drawings for structural steel components used in various construction projects. The VDC Structural Steel Detailer III will work closely with our steel detailing, engineering and fabrication teams to ensure that all steel components are designed and fabricated to exact specifications. The VDC Structural Steel Detailer III will also aid in checking the steel detailing teams models and drawings to make sure they adhere to industry and ISAT standards. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of steel fabrication and construction processes, as well as experience using BIM software and other industry-standard tools.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and other project documentation. Being able to download and organize drawings, models and project info from sources such as Procore or BIM 360.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of all areas of construction that steel is involved in, from start to finish for all types of projects including commercial, industrial, residential and municipal.
  • In depth knowledge understanding of real-world construction practices and anticipate use cases to effectively address project objectives.
  • Create 3D models of structures using Advance Steel.
  • Produce fabrication packages including shop drawings, erection drawings, .DXF’s, .NC files and 3D BIM coordination files, shop cut lists, Advance Bill of Materials, from Advance Steel for all types of structural and miscellaneous steel projects.
  • Being able to produce steel fabrication drawings based on the AISC Detailing For Steel Construction Third Edition.
  • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and other team members to ensure accuracy and completeness of drawings.
  • Communicate with production team to ensure all components are fabricated to exact specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with building codes, standards, and regulations including, but not limited to, IFC, UFC, and CBC.
  • Learn and apply proper techniques according to VDC standards.
  • Identify and resolve any design or construction issues that arise during the project.
  • Maintain accurate records of all project drawings and revisions.
  • Possess basic knowledge of BIM360 and familiarity with ISAT products and their implementation.
  • Assist with project coordination and management as needed.
  • Complete 3D model checks, coordinating with the BIM team while also checking 2D steel drawings utilizing ISAT’s checking process.
  • Sit in on meetings with clients and team members and professionally relay project status, issues, due dates and information about the project.
  • Ability to run multiple projects with the help of in-house detailing and third-party detailers.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates degree in engineering, architecture, drafting or related field preferred, but not required.
  • 10+ years of experience in steel detailing, including experience with 3D modeling software such as Advance Steel, Tekla, SDS2 and Revit.
  • Knowledge of steel fabrication techniques, welding procedures, installation processes and industry code standards such as AISC and AWS.
  • Ability to find and appropriately create weld symbols for correct pre-qualified welding procedures based on the Steel Construction Manual.
  • Knowledge of Steel Construction Manual and the AISC Detailing For Steel Construction Third Edition.
  • Knowledge of data transfer files such as .kss, .smlx, .sfr, CIS/2 files.
  • Knowledge of the steel detailing standard approval process.
  • Previous experience in steel detailing project management preferred.
  • Strong math skills and ability to calculate material quantities and dimensions.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively.
